Here’s what’s coming up in the San Francisco Bay Area:
9/12/19 — Squeeze at the Fox. I saw Squeeze open for David Bowie at Vet Stadium. It would be interesting to see them in a place where I could actually see them.
9/12/19 — The T Sisters as part of the Bernie Dalton Memorial Concert and Benefit at the Chapel
9/12/19 and 9/13/19 — The Mountain Goats with Lydia Loveless at the Fillmore
9/13/19 — Tim Bluhm house concert. This is already sold out, but it’s a KC Turner Presents in case you want to try…
9/13/19 — The Stone Foxes at the Sweetwater
9/13/19 – CAKE (with Ben Folds Five) at Shoreline. WTF, CAKE? You freaking never play live anywhere near the Bay Area and then when you do you play SHORELINE?!? Really?!? You can’t play the Greek Theatre in Berkeley or some place that I would actually go to… my love for you is lessening, not that I think you care but I want to love you!
9/15/19 — The Brother Brothers at BotH. I really like these guys. They are mellow and sweet.
9/17/19 — Ex Hex at The New Parish. Recommend!
9/17/19 & 9/18/19 — David Bromberg (with Jordan Tice opening) at the Freight
9/18/19 — Mark Knopfler at The Greek
9/19/19 — The Paper Kites at the Fillmore. I believe that we saw them at the Way Home festival and I believe that I liked them. This is not a ringing endorsement FYI.
9/20/19 — Maggie Rogers at the Greek. I really think I need to go to this.
9/20/19 & 9/21/19 — Billy Strings at the Independent. I suspect these will sell out. He was on fire a year or two ago. I saw him at RWR and would love to see him again, so I’ll probably try to get tickets for one of these nights, except they are both sold out and I never did get tickets. Maybe next time?
9/21/19 — Jackie Greene at the Sweetwater.
9/21/19 & 9/22/19 — Brandi Carlile at the Greek — another seated show and I’m really not sure of my schedule in September so I’ll be waiting on this one. Also, a second night was added so I don’t feel as much pressure to make this decision right now. Looks like I scored tickets for the 22nd.
9/23/19 through 9/25/19 — Yo La Tengo at The Chapel
9/23/19 — Courtney Marie Andrews at GAMH. I liked her when I saw her but it was a show of CCR covers and each person only performed one song, so there’s that. Her outfit was AH-Mazing (think Elizabeth Cook/ALT, etc) and she seems to be everywhere. I’d be willing to check her out doing her own stuff. By the way…. Brandi Carlile is opening for Courtney. For realz!!! I can’t go but you should buy your ticket. How many chances are you gonna get to see Brandi Carlile at a place as small and intimate as GAMH at this point. Note: I have seen her at Slim’s!
9/24/19 — Paul Cauthen at Lagunitas Ampitheater. As Rod says ‘you like him.’ and I do! Tickets available on 9/3/19
9/24/19 — Durand Jones & The Indications at The Regency. I don’t like the Regency, but this is someone that I’ve been trying to see for awhile now.
9/24/19 — Fontaines D.C. at the Independent. I caught a part of a song of theirs at SXSW this year. I think this was the band that sounded angry and I wasn’t very interested, but then I heard their album (on NPR’s All Songs Considered: New Music Friday) and it seemed more interesting. This is also sold out!
9/24/19 — Of Monsters and Men at the Fox Theatre
9/24/19 & 9/25/19 — Jonathan Richman (with Tommy Larkins on drums) at the Swedish American Hall
9/25/19 — Paul Cauthen at Moe’s Alley. As Rod says, ‘you like him’ and I do!
9/26/19 — Social Distortion, Flogging Molly and The Devil Makes Three at the Greek Theater. There’s so much to say about this that I don’t know where to start.
9/27/19 — Glen Hansard at the Masonic. I’m going despite the fact that it’s at the Masonic. Thanks Jessica for scoring our tixs!
9/28/19 — Jenny Lewis at the Fox. I always really enjoy Jenny Lewis and, of course, I always secretly hope for the Watson Twins as a part of the show (opener or back-up singers or…)
9/29/19 — Marc Broussard and Samantha Fish at the Fillmore. Andee recently saw Samantha Fish at OSMF and said she shredded.
9/29/19 — Tash Sultana at the Greek. I really wanted to see her when she played here last time, but I think it was sold out (or I had other plans). Maybe this time?
9/29/19 — Pokey LaFarge (solo) at Freight & Salvage
10/1/19 — Nilufer Yanya at the Independent. I think I just heard her on NPR’s Best Album’s of 2019 (so far) and I liked what I heard.
10/1/19 — Cigarettes After Sex at the Fox in Oakland. I really like their sound; I didn’t think they were anything special live, though they did sound exactly like the recorded version (meaning they are good, but they don’t really move or interact with the crowd or do anything interesting IMO — at least they didn’t the time I saw them at GAMH and they didn’t seem to have enough material for an entire set though that was awhile ago)
10/3/19 — John Prine at the Fox
10/3/19 — Ruston Kelly at the Independent. I would check him out!
10/4/19 — Van Morrison at the Greek Theater
10/4/19 – 10/6/19 — HSB and I swear I heard Hayes Carll announce that he’d be there! I guess so will I. The struggle is real, folks! 🙂 Medleys starting in July…. it’s July!
10/5/19 — The Fruit Bats at The Chapel
10/6/19 — Mandolin Orange at The Chapel. I’d be totally willing to do this, but I think I’d fall asleep on the Sunday of HSB with this band (though they play such pretty music)
10/7/19 — Caroline Rose at Lagunitas Ampitheater. She is so much fun! I would recommend this show. The last time I saw her, she got totally wrapped up in her mic cord while she was dancing around and ending up falling and was so twisted up that one of her band members had to come and get her out of it. She laughed about it the entire time which only made me love her more! Tickets available 9/17.
10/7/19 — The Punch Brothers are performing at the Freight for the annual fundraising celebration. As is the case with fundraisers, the tickets are pricey and I’m on the fence though I do have a deep love for the Punch Brothers.
10/8/19 & 10/9/19 — DhakaBrahka at The Freight
10/9/19 — Ingrid Michaelson at The Fillmore
10/10/19 — Damien Jurado at the Chapel. This would not be my first choice of places to see him since the audience tends to be talky and it’s an old chapel, but I LOVE Damien Jurado. So I’ll be there unless I’m not here.
10/10/19 — IDLES at The Fillmore
10/11/19 — Son Volt at Slim’s
10/11/19 — Kishi Bashi at the Warfield
10/11/19 — Aaron Lee Tasjan at the Hopmonk in Novato. ALT is a good time and a snazzy dresser. This is a KC Turner Presents
10/11/19 — The Waterboys at the Fillmore
10/11/19 — Michael Franti and Spearhead at the Fox
10/11/19 — Bastille at the Greek Theater
10/12/19 — Rising Appalachia at the UC Theatre. I would really like to see them. I don’t love the UC Theatre
10/12/19 — Aaron Lee Tasjan at Cafe du Nord
10/13/19 — Joshua Radin & The Weepies at the Fillmore
10/15/19 — Lula Wiles at the Freight. I saw them at RWR this year and I really liked them so I’m hoping to do this.
10/16/19 — Devendra Banhart at the Fillmore (Pat!)
10/17/19 — J.S. Ondara at The Independent. I liked him when I saw him at SXSW and he was just featured on NPR’s Best Album’s of 2019 (so far).
10/18/19 — Tyler Childers at the Fox with Courtney Marie Andrews opening. I’m considering this; it will sell out! The floor has sold out and I guess I’ve decided not to go because I don’t like the balcony at the Fox — well, I don’t like to sit — and also because I’ve seen Tyler Childers at the Hotel Utah and I feel like this would be disappointing (as an experience) for me. That said, I highly recommend him!
10/18/19 — Liz Longley at the Hopmonk Novato. I don’t know when I saw her but her name and her look totally strike me, so I went back and apparently I saw her open for Delta Rae two years ago and I must have liked her cause I noted her name. So there you go…
10/19/19 — Delta Rae (with Frances Cone, opening) at The Independent. If I’m in town, I think I’ll be here. I want to check out Frances Cone and I liked Delta Rae every time I’ve seen them.
10/19/19 — X Ambassadors at the Warfield
10/19/19 — Chris Pureka and Laura Gibson at Cafe du Nord
10/19/19 — Monica Pasqual (of Blame Sally) at The Freight
10/20/19 — Chris Pureka and Laura Gibson at the Hopmonk Novato. I have been told for years that I need to see Chris Pureka. Someday I will. This is also a KC Turner presents show.
10/20/19 — Joseph at the Fillmore
10/22/19 — Andrew Bird with Meshell Ndegeocello opening at the Fox. I think I’d really like to go to this.
10/22/19- – Devendra Banhart at the UC Theatre. If I were choosing, I’d choose the Fillmore. The UC Theatre sound is bad IMO.
10/22/19 — Black Pumas at the Independent. This *should* sell out. I saw them at SXSW this past year and they were a good time.
10/23/19 — Todd Snider (with Ramblin’ Jack Elliott) at GAMH. B – Double E – Double R – U – N
10/24/19 — Jade Bird at the Fillmore. I’m super impressed that she’s headlining the Fillmore already and she deserves this. Go check her out! If I’m not in Greece (and the show doesn’t sell out before I figure that out), I’ll be there!
10/24/19 — Joe Pug at the Chapel. I do love this man, but continuing in the theme of fuck the patriarchy, I’m going to see Jade Bird *if* I’m in town
10/25/19 — Lucy Dacus at August Hall. I’d like to see her and I’d like to check out August Hall. I don’t think this will be the opportunity since I’m hoping to be in Greece celebrating my 50-ish and someone else’s actually 50th!
10/26/19 — Take Me To The River LIVE! at the Fillmore. celebrating the music of New Orleans featuring The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Ivan Neville, Ian Neville, Walter “Wolfman” Washington plus Mardi Gras Indians with “Big Chief” Monk Boudreaux of The Golden Eagles and “Big Chief” Romeo of the 9th Ward Hunters
10/29/19 — Shovels and Rope (with John Paul White formerly of The Civil Wars) at the Fillmore. We shall see if I’m in town. May have to buy the ticket anyway and cross my fingers…
10/30/19 — Ra Ra Riot at GAMH
10/30/19 & 10/31/19 — The Mother Hips at The Sweetwater. The first show is acoustic and seated. The second is their rock and roll bash.
11/1/19 — Cat Power at the Fillmore. I don’t think I’ll be here for this, but I do want to see Cat Power.
11/1/19 — The Del McCoury Band at the Freight
11/1/19 — Justin Townes Earle at August Hall.
11/5/19 — Rhett Miller at Moe’s Alley. Wouldn’t this make a lovely birthday gift for a girl who may not be going on a birthday trip after all?
11/5/19 & 11/6/19 — Built to Spill at the Fillmore — I hear there’s been a line-up change since the last time that I saw them many SX’s ago.
11/6/19 — Rhett Miller at the Hopmonk in Sebastopol
11/8/19 –Ghost of Paul Revere at The Independent. I know I’ve seen them before and I also think there’s a song of there’s in my Spotify playlist.
11/9/19 — Blue Summit at the Hopmonk Novato. This is a band that is a must see. Really! The talent is incredible.
11/9/19 — Noah Gunderson at the Independent. He has had many iterations at the point. The picture attached to this made it look like this might be a new one then when I last saw him as part of the short-lived super-group, Glorietta.
11/10/19 — Penny & Sparrow at GAMH. Their name keeps popping up (new music Friday, different radio stations that I stream); I like what I’ve heard
11/14/19 — Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors at GAMH. I would go see him/them again.
11/14/19 & 11/15/19 — Mt. Joy at the Fillmore. Based on my last experience, I wouldn’t go again. I like their music, but the crowd was young and a bit douchy IMO. I don’t go to shows to hear the audience sing louder than the band for the entire show. It’s not my jam!
11/16/19 & 11/17/19 — Sleater-Kinney at the Fox. I really enjoyed them when I saw them in Dublin and would totally be up for see Carrie do her kicks again! Pre-sale is June 13th
11/19/19 — Low Cut Connie at the UC Theatre
11/23/19 — Julia Jacklin at The Independent
12/1/19 — The Dead South at the Fillmore with Scott H Biram opening. I thought I would love Scott H Biram and then I saw him and he was meh for me, but The Dead South was recommended to me.
12/4/19 & 12/5/19 — The California Honeydrops at The Independent
12/7/19 — Angel Olsen at the Fox
12/7/19 — Lee Fields & The Expressions at Slim’s. I have thoroughly enjoyed myself both times that I’ve seen Lee Fields.
12/12/19 — KOLARS at the Independent. Fuck yeah!
12/12/19 — Vintage Trouble at The New Parish. This is unfortunate IMO as I love VT, but have to go see my girl, Lauren!\\
12/13/19 — The Brothers Comatose at the UC Theatre. You know I want to go to this. I don’t know if it’s gonna happen though with mom visiting and this not really be a seated venue.
12/14/19 — The T Sisters at The Freight. Hoping I can do this; maybe I can bring my mom.
12/15/19 — Lucy Kaplansky at the Freight. I still haven’t really seen her.
12/20/19 — The Joy Formidable at The Chapel. I like them; they are LOUD!

12/21/19 — Trace Bundy’s Acoustic Holiday at the Freight
12/27/19 – 12/29/19 — Lucero at The Sweetwater. I imagine I’ll be at one of these shows.
1/30/20 — Ron Pope at GAMH. I saw him as part of the CCR tribute show at Americanafest 2018 and then I ran into him the next day (or so) at Basement East and started talking to him. He was awesome and I’d really like to get out there and support him and go see this show. It’s a long ways off, so we shall see.
3/28/20 — Paul Thorn at Cornerstone. This is pretty much a definite if I’m in town. I love this man….

3/20/18 — Bonnie Raitt & Her Band at the Fox. This is sold out
3/21/18 – Odetta with Linda Tillery at SF Jazz
3/21/18 – Max Gomez (who I enjoyed when I saw him in the past) is opening for Mary Gauthier at the Freight. I may have seen Mary years ago at the Lyons Folk Festival, but I can’t remember. (Surprise! but in all fairness I believe it was before I was keeping lists of shows that I saw) I do know that she writes some pretty amazing lyrics and I’ve liked what I’ve heard.
3/22/18 — Della Mae at the Sweetwater. I’m pretty certain that I’ve seen these ladies before and liked them but nothing specific comes to mind…. actually The Chapel and mom jeans comes to mind.
3/23/18 — Umphree’s McGee at the Fox Theatre. Why is there so much good music all on the same night?
3/23/18 — Della Mae at the Freight
3/23/18 — Mason Jennings at the Sweetwater. I’ve wanted to see him for awhile, but apparently it won’t be this time either.
3/23/18 — Brett Dennen at the Fillmore. I was totally planning to go to this, but then I bought tickets for this…
3/23/18 — Rhett Miller at Slim’s. How can I say no to those hips and those eyes? Mmmm Mmmmm Good! Sadly, I need to miss this.
3/24/18 — Lucy Dacus at the Rickshaw Stop. I don’t remember who told me to check her out, but she’s in my music notes on my phone so I’m putting this here. Also, I tried to see her several times at SX, but to no avail. Once I waited in line outside where she was playing (Stubb’s, night #2)
3/24/18 — The Easy Leaves (duo) with Frankie Boots at the Mystic Theater. Though I fly back to SF on Sat and don’t arrive til early evening, I’m still trying to make this work…

3/27/18 — James Bay at the Fillmore

3/28/18 — Jake Bugg at the UC Theatre. I still haven’t seen him and I’d like to….
3/28/18 — Pussy Riot at the Rickshaw. There are two shows and they are both sold out!
3/29/18 — The Oh Hellos at the Fillmore
3/29/18 — Kristin Hersh and Grant-Lee Phillips at the Chapel. I have a huge crush on Kristin Hersh and seeing her live is always enjoyable. Also, if you haven’t read ‘Rat Girl’ yet, you should.

3/31/18 — Gill Landry (of OCMS) at the Hotel Utah
4/3/18 — I’m With Her (Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O’Donovan) plus Jonny Fritz opening (formerly known as Jonny Corndawg). I was in even before I realized that Jonny Fritz was included. He’s just the icing on the cake, confirming the decision I had already made to buy this ticket! And this is now sold out!
4/3/18 — Mt Joy at Cafe du Nord. I would definitely be going to this if I didn’t already have tickets to I’m With Her.
4/4/18 — Low Cut Connie at the Chapel. This is pretty much a must IMO; they are so much fun!
4/5/18 — Kevin Morby at the Fillmore
4/5/18 — The Lil Smokies at the Independent
4/6/18 — 4/8/18 — The Winter Wondergrass lineup in Tahoe this year looks pretty amazing with The Devil Makes Three, Elephant Revival, California Honeydrops, Shook Twins, etc. I’m not sure if Elephant Revival is still playing this festival; they cancelled most of their dates and are going on hiatus.
4/6/18 — The Devil Makes Three at The Catalyst. It’s more or less a hometown show; good stuff! Oh and of course it’s sold out, but of course I have tickets…. and a hotel room!
4/6/18 — Haim at the Greek Theater on Friday, April 6th. They haven’t ever done much for me, but I think I may not be the majority here.
4/7/18 — Andrea Gibson at GAMH
4/7/18 — Brian Fallon & The Howling Weather at the Independent. This sold out before I managed to get tickets….
4/7/18 — Delhi 2 Dublin at the Fillmore. This was a band that I had wanted to see at HSB, but wanting isn’t doing… maybe though Brian Fallon is competition (though completely different).
4/7/18 and 4/8/18 — Marc Cohn at the Freight. I think he is the reason that I first saw Brandi Carlile. I saw him at eTown when I lived in Colorado and he was super-interesting.
4/8/18 — The Breeders at the Masonic. Seriously considering this…
4/8/18 — The Shook Twins opening for The Dustbowl Revival at UC Theatre. It looks like this was moved to the Starline Social Club. I like the Shook Twins okay, but I LOVE Dustbowl Revival.
4/9/18 — Scott H Biram at Brick and Mortar. Teri and I went to see him and I really wanted to like him, but meh… I would consider giving him a second chance.
4/12/18 — Goodnight, Texas is opening for The Family Crest (from San Francisco) at GAMH
Rebirth Brass Band at Bimbo’s on Friday, April 13th and Saturday, April 14th
4/15/18 — Cry Cry Cry (with Lucy Kaplansky, Dar Williams and Richard Shindell) at the Freight. There’s a 4:00 show and a 7:00 show. These are both sold out and I waited. Boo!
4/15/18 – Ron Gallo at the Independent, recommended by Rod
4/17/18 – Dashboard Confessional at the Fillmore
4/18/18 — Lo Moon at Brick and Mortar. I’ve been hearing a song or two of theirs and am very interested in this show. Conflict, but maybe I can do both…
4/18/18 — The Family Crest at Renee and Irish Greg’s Pop-up at the Haight Street Art Center. This will partially make up for not seeing them last week, but not entirely… Can I do both shows on a Wed night? I think I can…
4/19/18 and 4/20/18 — Bettye LaVette will be at the Freight. She just released an album of Bob Dylan songs that she has made entirely her own. I have heard several cuts from the album and it makes me want to prioritize going to see this legend.
4/20/18 — El Radio Fantastique at BotH. I hear they are fun.
4/21/18 — Shelby Lynne at The Freight. Rumor has it that I would like to hang out with her.
4/23/18 and 4/24/18 — Tyler Childers and Lukas Nelson at GAMH. I can’t wait to see Tyler Childers again and Jill is very very excited about Lukas Nelson. I have heard he is jammy, so I am a little less excited but I’ve also heard he’s very purty. UPDATE: Having seen both Tyler Childers and Lukas Nelson (separately) at SXSW, I highly recommend this show. Lukas can be a little jammy, but I can live with that. He’s good! Also, now I need to see Tyler Childers again because he didn’t play my favorite song (though he did the first time that I saw him). UPDATE: 4/23/18 is sold out!
4/24/18 — Hayley Kiyoko at the Fillmore
4/24/18 and 4/25/18 — Los Lonely Boys at the Freight. Second date added
4/26/18 — Cigarettes After Sex at the Fillmore. They played GAMH in September and sold out. While they sounded exactly like their album and I like their sound (think Mazzy Star), I cannot imagine going to see them at the Fillmore as the headliner. They barely seemed to have enough material to cover an hour and they were boring as performers.
4/27/18 – Mipso at The Freight. I really love this band; I see them whenever I can and am excited to say that they will be playing RWR again this year.
4/27/18 — Poor Man’s Whiskey at GAMH
4/27/18 — Phoebe Bridgers at BotH. Damn! I was totally planning to go to this show, but somehow Mipso at the Freight is the same night and I have those tickets already. 😦 Though it’s not really a sad thing because Mipso will be awesome!
4/27/18 through 4/29/18 — LCD Soundsystem and TV on the Radio at the Greek. I really enjoyed LCD Soundsystem when I saw them at the Way Home festival, but I also don’t have a strong memory of them; go figure. Regardless, I’ve been interested in seeing TV on the Radio for awhile as well.
4/29/18 — Mipso at the Mystic in Petaluma. They are fun! See my blog post.
4/29/18 — Mark Erelli at a house concert in Diamond Heights
5/1/18 — Tony Furtado at The Back Room. I saw him at RWR either this past summer or in 2016 (more likely).
5/1/18 — Smoking Popes at BotH
5/2/18 — Jade Bird is opening for Colter Wall at the Independent. Sadly this is sold out, though I may go and take my chances that I’ll be able to get one.
5/3/18 – 5/6/18 — Rosanne Cash and Ry Cooder at SF Jazz
5/3/18 — Of Montreal at the UC Theatre on Thursday, May 3rd.
5/3/18 — Lissie at the Independent
5/3/18 and 5/4/18 — Meshell Ndegeocello at the Freight
5/4/18 – Erika Wennerstrom
(of the Heartless Bastards) with Josh Pearson at The Chapel
5/4/18 — Hot Buttered Rum and Kyle Hollingsworth Band at the Fillmore
5/5/18 — Con Brio with Royal Jelly Jive at the Fillmore
5/5/18 — Rikkha with Junk Parlor at Old Western Saloon in Point Reyes. I *really* enjoyed this band when I saw them at BotH. Check out the video and ‘review’ on the blog
5/9/19 — George Ezra at the Fox
5/9/18 — Sam Chase and David Luning at the Haight Street Art Center as part of Renee and Irish Greg’s free pop-up.
5/10/18 — Sallie Ford at the Sweetwater. We saw her at HSB and really liked her; she had a pretty guitar.
5/11/18 — Rogue Wave at the Independent
5/11/18 — Sallie Ford at Brick and Mortar. If I were going to go to one of the Sallie Ford shows, it would be this one, but alas…
5/11/18 — Editors at the Regency
5/12/18 — Pokey Lafarge at GAMH. This is a show I’ll be sad to miss. I recommend that you go!
5/12/18 — The Coffis Brothers & The Mountain Men + David Luning at the Sweetwater
5/13/18 — The Human League at the Regency. Don’t you want me, baby?
5/17/18 — Willie Tea Taylor is opening for Reckless Kelly at Cornerstone
5/19/18 — The California Honeydrops at the Fillmore
5/24/18 — Tank and the Bangas at the Fillmore. This would be a fun show, but not for me. 😦
5/24/18 — John Prine at the Warfield
5/25/18 — Lake Street Dive at the Fillmore. This is sold out which I’m okay since I won’t be here…
5/25/18 — Lawrence at the Independent. This is a band that Andee and I saw at SXSW and enjoyed. I would consider this.
5/25/18 – Ghost of Paul Revere at The Freight. They opened for The Brothers Comatose at the Fieldwork anniversary. I think I liked them, but they were no Horseshoes and Hand Grenades (the second of the three bands)
5/25/18 — Blue Summit is playing at The Back Room. This isn’t on The Back Room’s calendar as apparently they are opening for Mile Twelve, but it is on Blue Summit’s list of events and Tom told me about it.
5/26/18 — The Revivalists at The Masonic
5/27/18 — St. Paul and the Broken Bones at the UC Theatre. This is sure to be a good show, but I doubt I’ll be back in time to make it.
5/28/18 — George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic at The Independent. I heard a rumor that he is retiring from touring so if you haven’t checked him out before, you might want to make a point of doing it now!
5/29/18 — Tom Jones at the Masonic. This was re-scheduled. This would just be funny IMO.
5/29/18 — Damien Jurado at the Chapel. He breaks my heart every time I see him and yet I also find him incredibly inspiring. I’ll be there!
5/30/18 — Todd Rundgren at the Masonic — This takes me back to high school/college.
5/31/18 — Hackensaw Boys at Brick and Mortar
5/31/18 — The Eels at the Fillmore
5/31/18 — Frazey Ford (of the Be Good Tanyas) at The Independent. Seriously considering this
6/1/18 — The Brothers Comatose at the Fillmore. I think you all know that I will be at this show if travel plans allow. I recommend you be here too! Tickets have been purchased!
6/1/18 — Social Distortion at the Masonic. Low Cut Connie is opening and I really love Low Cut Connie. There’s a blog post about them if you want to read more.
6/1/18 — Ray LaMontagne and Neko Case at the Greek
6/1/18 — Liz Phair at the Swedish American Hall. This is sold out and I would be super bummed, except that I’ll be seeing my favorite local band tonight!
6/2/18 — Okkervil River at Bimbo’s. I think I’ll have to do this if I’m in town.
6/2/18 — Rising Appalachia at the UC Theatre
6/2/18 and 6/3/18 — Glen Phillips (of Toad the Wet Sprocket) is playing the HopMonk Novato as a part of KC Turner presents line-up
. I saw him perform once before at a KC Turner in Dublin, Ireland and he was amazing! June 2nd is sold out and sadly (?) I already have tickets for Mouths of Babes on 6/3/18!
6/3/18 — Mouths of Babes at The Freight. So excited to see these two women again. As the description says ‘powerful and romantic contemporary folk’.
Lord Huron at the Fox on Sunday, June 3rd
6/4/18 — The Kooks at the Warfield. I guess this is the postponed show without Barns Courtney. I really liked The Kooks when I saw them at Outside Lands and would totally be interested in seeing them again, but I would have been more excited if Barns Courtney were still opening and I weren’t so darned busy with work/catch-up.
6/5/18 — Slaid Cleaves at the Freight. The last time I tried to see him the show was cancelled, so I’m hopeful this time, but did not buy a ticket…
6/5/18 and 6/6/18 — Calexico at GAMH. Julia Jacklin is opening both nights.
6/5/18 and 6/6/18 — Yo Lo Tengo at the Fillmore
6/7/18 — Dr. Dog at the Fox. This is one of those bands that I wish I liked more than I do, but lots of my friends really seem to like them.
6/8/18 — Nicki Bluhm at The Independent. Strongly considering, but need to see if it’s just her or her and the band. I was super not impressed with the band the last time I saw them at Stern Grove, but I’ve liked her when I’ve seen her doing solo stuff
6/8/18 — Turnpike Troubadours at the Fillmore. Also the opener, Charley Crockett was just featured on World Cafe Live on XPN. I haven’t listened yet but the preview sounded fascinating.
6/9/18 and 6/10/18 — Novato Festival of Art, Wine and Music THIS FESTIVAL IS 100% FREE!

6/10/18 — Speedy Ortiz at Cafe du Nord. They were just featured on my new music Friday podcast and I liked what I heard.
6/13/18 — Lydia Loveless opening for Justin Townes Earle at the Freight. What to do? What to do? The last time I saw JTE, I felt pretty certain we reconciled, but have we…?
6/15/18 (Friday) – Caroline Rose
at The Rickshaw Stop. Let me say that this is a must in my opinion, especially cause tickets are only $12. The entertainment will be well worth your $12. Andee, thanks for adding this show.
6/15/18 — Fantastic Negrito at the Fillmore. Damn! I’m really torn now. I mean I bought tickets for Caroline Rose, but… Fantastic Negrito at the Fillmore. I’ve wanted a chance to see him again and this looks like it’s going to be an album release party… It’s hard to be me! I might actually have tickets for both of these shows. I think I can do it!
6/16/18 – JD McPherson at The Independent
6/16/18 — Stars at the Fillmore. I’m pretty sure that I saw them at the Way Home festival in Canadia
6/16/18 — Janelle Monae at the Masonic. I have really liked what I’ve heard from her new album that just dropped and my friend Lala shared her video for PYNK which was incredible. This is a real possibility for me though I’m wondering if it’s sold out.
6/17/18 — Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls with special guests Lucero on Sunday, June 17th. Love Love Love
6/18/18 and 6/19/18 – Ted Leo and the Pharmacists at the Rickshaw Stop. The first night is sold out!
6/21/18 — The Specials at the Fox Theatre
6/21/18 — Ana Tijoux presents Roja y Negro at Bimbo’s. I have wanted to see Ana Tijoux for awhile now, so I think this may need to be a reality.
6/21/18 — Robert Plant and Jim James at the Greek. Not for me; maybe for you?
6/21/18 — Della Mae with Ashleigh Flynn opening at the Sweetwater. I saw Ashleigh Flynn at one of KC Turner’s house concerts and I really liked her. I’ve seen Della Mae before, but I don’t have any strong memories of the band other than their clothes
6/22/18 — Trampled by Turtles with Deer Tick opening at the Fox Theatre
6/22/18 — The Pretenders at the Masonic. If I didn’t already have tickets for Deer Tick/TbT, I would be very seriously considering this. I have loved the Pretenders since I was in high school. I had such a crush on Chrissie Hynde or maybe I wanted to be her; I don’t know which.
6/22/18 — Violent Femmes at the UC Theatre
6/23/18 and 6/24/18 — Shawn Colvin at the Freight. This is pretty much a must IMO! Who doesn’t want to hear some amazing murder ballads? And I feel comfortable saying these will sell out quickly but maybe not…
6/24/18 — Gomez at the Fox
6/25/18 — Red Baraat at The Sweetwater. They are FUN!
6/26/18 — Lloyd Cole at the Swedish American Hall
6/27/18 — The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. This will be fun if last time was any indication!!!
6/28/18 — The Go-Go’s at the Fox. I think this could be fun, but probably not for me which is good because it’s sold out.
6/29/18 — Red Molly at the Freight. I can’t remember when/how I saw these ladies for the first time. Did they open for someone? Was it at Kate Wolf? Who knows? I could look back at my show lists (or my diary — looking at you, Jill), but I can say that wherever I saw them, I took notice and I have seen them since then. Crystelle is with me on this one!
6/30/18 — Steve Poltz at the Swedish American Hall. Oh yes!!! He’s the best!
7/1/18 — Thao and the Get Down Stay Down and M Ward at Stern Grove. I’m hoping I can make this work!
7/1/18 — Steve Poltz at the Hopmonk in Novato
7/7/18 — Matt Costa at the Swedish American Hall. I just saw him at SXSW and really enjoyed him.
7/7/18 — The Wood Brothers at the Sweetwater. This will be a GREAT show. Small room, amazing musicians and an amazing dancer….
7/8/18 — Billy Bob Thornton & the Boxmasters
7/13/18 — Paul Thorn and the Blind Boys of Alabama at the UC Theatre. I wish I’d be here for this. As many of you know, I love Paul Thorn.
Red Wing Roots from Friday, July 13th through Sunday July 15th. Woot!!!!Got my tixs and it looks like we’ve added another newbie this year!
Wye Oak at the Independent on Tuesday, July 17th. I may be back in town for this, but it seems like this is yet another year that I am not going to see Wye Oak at this point.
7/18/18 — Phoebe Bridgers at GAMH. I really wanted to see her when she played BotH, but there was a conflict.
7/19/18 and 7/20/18 — Ry Cooder at GAMH. Both shows are sold out. Not a surprise!
7/19/18 — Sarah Shook and the Disarmers at BotH
7/20/18 — David Ramirez at the Swedish American Hall. Andee says I should go to this. This is another KC Turner Presents show.
7/21/18 — Bill Kirchen at the Freight
7/21/18 — Toad the Wet Sprocket at GAMH. Megan Slankard opens.
7/22/18 — The Low Anthem at the Swedish American Hall.
7/22/18 — Matt the Electrician with Ben Morrison (of the Brothers Comatose) opening at the Hopmonk Novato. If only I had a car…
7/24/18 — The Bar Chords at Brick & Mortar
7/25/18 — Reckless Kelly at GAMH
7/25/18 — Shawn Mullins at the Freight. I would definitely be going to this if I were in town, especially because Max Gomez is opening. I believe the first time I saw Shawn Mullins was the first time that I saw Max Gomez, but that’s possibly incorrect.
7/26/18 and 7/27/18 — The California Honeydrops at the Sweetwater. The 27th is sold out, I believe.
7/27/18 — Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore at GAMH (backed by the Guilty Ones). Brian has an extra ticket to this show and has posted about it in the Live Music page on Facebook.
7/27/18 — The Decemberists at the Fox (This show was originally scheduled to be held at the Greek). They’re new album sounds pretty amazing so far. I would consider this.
7/28/18 — Kuinka and the Rainbow Girls at the Marin JCC. If you didn’t see my blog post, KUINKA is one of my favorite new bands from the RWR festival. Lots of energy and fun!
7/28/18 — ShinyRibs at the Sweetwater. See my blog post on why you really should go see this band/show. I think the Sweetwater would be preferable to the Catalyst, but if the Catalyst if better for you then see them there…
7/29/18 — ShinyRibs at the Catalyst
7/29/18 — The Mowgli’s at Cornerstone in Berkeley
7/31/18 — Wild Child with Matthew Logan Vasquez (formerly of Delta Spirit) opening at Lagunitas. (Free) tickets are sold out for this, but more will be released on July 27th at noon. Full summer line-up and ticket release here.
7/31/18 — Dawes is Live at Amoeba in the Haight
8/1/18 — LSD Tour at the Masonic. Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle and Dwight Yoakam
8/2/18 — The Easy Leaves are opening at The Sweetwater
8/3/18 — The Stone Foxes at The Sweetwater
8/3/18 — Shooter Jennings at Slim’s
8/4/18 — The Petaluma Music Festival
— The Brothers Comatose and The Rainbow Girls for starters… I went to this festival once with Teri and it was AMAZING. I won’t lie that the line-up could not have been beat and this year’s does not compare in my mind, but you never know what August 4th will bring.
8/4/18 — Cody Jinks at the Warfield. I saw his sold out show at GAMH last year and I really enjoyed him, though a part of that had to do with Paul Cauthen opening. As Rod said later, you liked him!
8/4/18 — River Whyless at the Chapel. I really liked them when I saw them at RWR.
8/4/18 and 8/5/18 — John Doe at the HopMonk Novato. August 4th is sold out, but I would have expected that! I’m surprised August 5th isn’t.
8/5/18 — Givers at Brick and Mortar
8/6/18 — Ace Frehley (yes, I said Ace Frehley) at Cornerstone in Berkeley. I can’t lie that if I’m not doing anything else this night, I just might have to do this.
8/6/18 — tUnE-yArDs at Lagunitas. (Free) tickets are sold out for this, but more will be released on August 3rd at noon.
8/8/18 — The Lowest Pair at The Lost Church. This is sold out.
8/8/18 — Hop Along at GAMH. This is another one of those bands that I think I should like more than I do. I especially want to like them because they are a hometown (Philly) band.
8/10/18 — Belly at GAMH. I do love Belly….
8/10//18 — Charley Crockett with The Highway Poets at the Mystic. The Highway Poets have had a line-up change since I last saw them. K just saw Charley Crockett at RWR and he was AMAZING! He was also recently featured on World Cafe Live.
8/11/18 — Perfume Genius at Bimbo’s
8/11/18 — Wild Child at the Cornerstone in Berkeley
8/14/18 — American Aquarium at Slim’s
8/14/18 through 8/16/18 — Van Morrison at the Masonic. I still have never seen Van the Man. I don’t think this will be the time when I do.
David Byrne at the Fox on Thursday, August 16th and Friday, August 17th. These are both sold out and I’m a little bummed. David Byrne is a legend in my mind and I’d love to see him live (but not enough to go to Bill Graham Auditorium).
8/17/18 — Mt Joy at the Independent. I’ve been trying to see them for awhile now (local Philly band) so I may try to make this one happen, especially if no one suddenly offers me a ticket for David Byrne on Friday, August 17th — a girl can hold on to unrealistic fantasies, right????
8/17/18 through 8/19/18 — Erasure at the Masonic
8/18/18 and 8/19/18 — Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats at the Fox.
8/18/18 — Katie Herzig at The Independent. I really like Katie. I originally saw her open for Brandi Carlile when I took my parents to see her at Sellersville in PA, but I also saw her a few years ago at The Independent. She doesn’t seem to tour often, so I would catch her if you can.
8/18/18 — Amanda Shires with Lilly Hiatt opening at GAMH. Why do all the good shows have to be on the same night?
8/19/18 — The Easy Leaves (duo) at Hotel Utah
8/22/18 — The Punch Brothers at the Fox Theatre. This is a completely seated show which is just stupid (IMO)
8/22/18 — Brandi Carlile at the Mountain Winery with Jade Bird opening.
8/23/18 — Ra Ra Riot at the Independent
8/26/18 – Joe Pug at Hopmonk Tavern in Novato. This is a KC Turner presents show and I think I got myself a ride to this one! Big woot cause I really like Joe Pug. Here’s a listing of all of KC’s shows
8/26/18 — Tim Bluhm at the Sweetwater. This is a seated show.
8/26/18 — Jimmy Smith of The Gourds appearing as Smith/McKay at Hotel Utah
8/28/18 — King Tuff at Lagunitas. Free tickets will be released at noon on August 7th.
8/30/18 — Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit with Aimee Mann at the Greek Theatre. I really don’t know how I could miss this! Sadly this is an all-seated show at the Greek which I find annoying, but that won’t stop me! Thanks Kurt for buying the goods!
8/30/18 — Marcy Playground at Cornerstone
8/30/18 — The Human Condition (THC) at BotH. I saw them a long time ago once or twice and liked them pretty much. I remember that they had a song with lyrics that I found amusing.
8/31/18 — The Coffis Brothers at the Ivy Room
9/1/18 — Rodrigo y Gabriela at UC Theatre
9/2/18 — Sausalito Art Festival with Son Volt and Drive by Truckers. Might need to make this happen; I’ve never seen Son Volt
9/3/18 — Robert Ellis at The Sweetwater
9/4/18 — Bishop Briggs at the Fox. Hopefully I can do this; I’ve wanted to see her for awhile now (since she played the Fillmore)
9/5/18 — Adam Faucett at the Ivy Room
9/6/18 — Adam Faucett at Neck of the Woods
9/6/18 — Jade Bird at The Chapel. I really enjoyed her when she opened for Brandi Carlile and think it would be fun to see her again.
9/7/18 — Leon Bridges at the Greek. I’m sure this would be a good thing! (See what I did there?)
9/7/18 — Steve Poltz at Terrapin Crossroads
9/7/18 — Liz Brasher is opening for The Zombies at the Fillmore
9/8/18 — Diego’s Umbrella at the Sweetwater
9/10/18 — Arthur Buck at the Independent. This is a collaboration between Joseph Arthur and Peter Buck and I’ve liked what I’ve heard on the radio (and by the radio, I mean the college stations that I stream).
9/12/18 — Mavis Staples is playing the Freight’s anniversary. These tickets are spendy!!!
9/12/18 — Macy Gray at the Fillmore. This could be fun or it could be a shit show, at least that’s my understanding. At $50/ticket, I’m not willing to take the chance.
9/13/18 — Langhorne Slim at Terrapin Crossroads. If I were in town, this could have been the thing that got me to finally get to Terrapin. That said, I’d very likely be at the Fillmore. Easier and I see WEW much less frequently and Langhorne will be at HSB. (Woot!)
9/13/18 — Fruition at The Chapel
9/13/18 — Willie Watson at the Sweetwater
9/13/18 — Brett Dennen is opening for Jason Mraz at the Greek. I genuinely know almost nothing about Jason Mraz, but I do like Brett Dennen and have not been able to see him for awhile now
9/13/18 — Murder by Death at the Fillmore. They recently opened for TDM3. I won’t be here for this show, but if I were here I’d check them out! I would especially check them out because William Elliot Whitmore is opening and I LOVE WEW and he does not tour nearly frequently enough. I really wish I were going to be here for this show! I am seriously considering going to either DC or NYC to see this line-up in October.
9/14/18 — Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue at the Greek. I always love to see his guns… and him!
9/14/18 and 9/15/18 — The Record Company at the Fillmore. This is a rock-n-roll band. I really enjoyed them both times that I saw them. I feel super lucky to have seen them in a place as small as GAMH if they are now getting two nights headlining the Fillmore. I wish I were going to be here to see them!
9/15/18 — T Sisters at the Freight
9/15/18 — Todd Snider at the Sweetwater (seated show)
9/17/18 — Built to Spill at Slim’s.
9/17/18 — Greta Van Fleet at the Fox. See 9/19/18 below, but this is sold out.
9/17/18 and 9/18/18 — The John Doe Folk Trio at the Ivy Room. 9/17/18 is sold out. I have no doubt that 9/18 will sell out soon.
9/17/18 and 9/18/18 — Bettye Lavette at The Chapel doing her Dylan. I really wanted to go to see this show at The Freight and wasn’t able to make it happen. Maybe I can make it happen at The Chapel.
9/18/18 and 9/19/18 — Lake Street Dive at the Fillmore. They ALWAYS put on a good show. Can’t recommend enough and this WILL sell out. And thanks to Dan, I have a ticket! Of course, I’m sad because it means that I’m missing the Brothers Comatose at Slim’s. My life is hard; be glad you don’t have to experience these ‘problems’.
9/18/18 — Margaret Glaspy at the Sweetwater with Jenny O opening
9/19/18 — Margaret Glaspy at the Swedish American Hall, also with Jenny O opening
9/19/18 — The Brothers Comatose at Slim’s. So bummed that I won’t be able to make it to this due to previously purchased LSD ticket for the same night. To make me feel better, I remind myself that Ben is the one who turned me on to LSD.
9/19/18 — Greta Van Fleet at the Masonic. I’ve only heard one song that I can think of, but they sound like Led Zeppelin. This may be sold out too.
9/20/18 — Caleb Caudle opening for Ray Wylie Hubbard at the Freight.
9/20/18 – Liz Phair at The Fillmore. This is already sold out. 😦
9/20/18 — Lettuce w/ Amendola VS Blades opening at the UC Theatre. I can’t remember with whom, but I had a long conversation about Lettuce and they interest me. Amendola VS Blades opened for Wilco. I don’t think I cared for them. I think someone else REALLY did though, so I’m mentioning it here. Also after conversation with a friend, I am SURE that I did not care for Amendola VS Blades. In fact, I suspect you couldn’t pay me to go see them again, but to each his/her own.
9/21/18 — Arcade Fire at the Greek
9/21/18 — The English Beat at Cornerstone in Berkeley
9/21/18 – Shovels and Rope at the Fillmore. Yay!!!!
9/22/18 — Santa Cruz Mountains Sol Festival in Felton with The Brothers Comatose. The Mother Hips and ZZ Ward will also be playing among many others.
9/22/18 and 9/23/18 — Sonoma Harvest Music Festival. Line-up for Saturday is The Avett Brothers, Lake Street Dive, Shovels & Rope, The Suffers and Royal Jelly Jive. Sunday line-up is The Head and The Heart, Con Brio, ZZ Ward, Rodrigo y Gabriela and Rayland Baxter.
9/22/18 — Haley Heynderickx at Cafe du Nord. Again, I say why do all the shows need to be on the same night? I’d definitely be interested in seeing her if I weren’t already gonna be at the Sonoma Harvest Music Festival.
9/22/18 — Houndsmouth at The Fillmore. I really wanted to see them a couple years ago but then it seemed they had a line-up change and it seems like the female singer is no longer in the band, so I’m not so sure about seeing them. Good that I won’t have to decide since I will be in Sonoma.
9/22/18 — Rayland Baxter at August Hall
9/23/18 — Martin Sexton at the Sweetwater
9/24/18 — Hiss Golden Messenger at the Sweetwater. This is another one that I feel like I should like more than I do.
9/24/18 and 9/25/18 — The National at the Greek. Different openers. Big Thief on the 24th and Cat Power on the 25th.
9/26/18 — Superorganism at The Independent. This is a band that I tried to see at SXSW, but was unsuccessful. I predict this show will sell out; I’m not sure if I will be there or not. As predicted, this show sold out and they also added a second show on 9/27/18 which is not sold out yet.
9/26/18 — Lucy Spraggan at BoTH
9/26/18 — Hiss Golden Messenger at Cornerstone in Berkeley. As stated above, this is another one that I feel like I should like more than I do.
9/26/18 — John Doe Folk Trio at the Sweetwater
9/27/18 — Dirty Heads at the Fox. I saw them at the Aggie when I lived in CO and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Don’t know how much of that was the alcohol.
9/27/18 — Death Cab for Cutie at the Greek
9/28/18 — First Aid Kit at the Masonic. This is sold out!
9/28/18 — Lovelytheband at the Rickshaw Stop. They have a song I really like that’s popular on the radio (at least the college stations I listen to) right now.
9/29/18 — The Beths are opening for someone at the Independent. They have a song that I really like called ‘Future Me Hates Me’
9/29/18 — Barns Courtney is opening for The Wombats at the Warfield. I really liked Barns Courtney when I saw him more than a year ago.
9/29/18 — SHEL is playing the closing night of the Women Sports Film Festival. The show is on Mission Street, but it looks like tickets are for the entire festival and so are $150.
10/2/18 — The Vaccines at Slim’s
10/4/18 — Alice Merton at August Hall. She has a song that I liked when it was getting airplay
10/4/18 — Langhorne Slim and the Lost at Last Band at GAMH (also appearing over the weekend at HSB). I really want to make this work. Coordinating arrivals for the weekend and others’ desires…. it really challenges me. Turns out, it wasn’t really that challenging. You’ll find me here…
10/5/18 — The Weeks at BotH
10/5/18 — Gary Numan at Bimbo’s
10/5/18 — Steve Earle at GAMH (a benefit for SF Free Clinics). Not for me; definitely not on the Sat of HSB. Maybe for you?
10/5/18 — Lawrence at the Independent. I caught this band at SXSW and liked them. If it weren’t HSB weekend, I’d consider this.
10/5/18 — Jeff Tweedy at the Fillmore. This is sold out and I did *not* get a ticket. Update: I have a ticket now, but I’m still looking for another ticket for Andee. Let me know if you have an extra you want to sell me. Andee says if she doesn’t get one, she’ll have more money in her pocket and more sleep so I guess this is a win no matter how it ends.
10/5/18 — Steve Forbert at the Hopmonk Tavern in Sebastopol. I’m glad he’ll be at HSB so I don’t have to be sad that Sebastopol is so far away.
10/5/18 and 10/6/18 — Chuck Prophet’s annual HSB early (7 – 9:30) shows at the Make Out Room
10/5/18 – 10/7/18 — HSB and it’s confirmed that Tweedy will be there! It’s gonna be a really good and very difficult HSB this year!
10/6/18 — Conor Oberst at The Fillmore. Typical Sat night of HSB.
10/6/18 — Akaline Trio at the Warfield
10/6/18 — Gregory Alan Isakov at GAMH (also appearing over the weekend at HSB). This is sold out!
10/6/18 — Waxahatchee at The Chapel. I suspect this means they will be playing the Conor Oberst curated stage at HSB
10/7/18 — Lawrence at The New Parish.
10/7/18 — Ani DiFranco at the Fillmore with Andrea Gibson opening. They’ll both be at HSB, so maybe I’ll finally see Ani, probably not at the Fillmore, and maybe I’ll finally see Andrea too (people have been telling me to see her since I lived in Fort Collins).
10/7/18 — The Lone Bellow at GAMH (which seems surprising since I last saw them headlining the Fillmore). This is the Lone Bellow stripped down. Also, Ben Morrison is opening. However, it’s also the Sunday of HSB and seems tough. What do you say, Andee?
10/7/18 — Justin Townes Earle at Slim’s with Aaron Lee Tasjan opening. If I knew this was gonna be one of JTE’s more upbeat performances, I’d totally be in but a slow set on the Sunday of HSB could kill me.
10/7/18 — Monks of Doom (Camper van Beethovan and Counting Crows members) at The Ivy Room
10/7/18 — The California Honeydrops at The Independent
10/8/18 — Sting and Shaggy at the Masonic. I am not really a Sting fan, but I heard one of their songs and I really liked it
10/8/18 — Michael Franti at The Sweetwater. This is sold out!
10/9/18 — We Were Promised Jetpacks at GAMH
10/9/18 — Austin Lucas at BoTH
10/9/18 — The Brother Brothers are opening at The Freight. I’ve seen these guys twice now (including last night) and I really like them. Mellow, but great voices and song-writing and they are darned nice guys.
10/9/18 — Tennis (solo in stereo) with Matt Costa opening at The Chapel. This is sold out!
10/9/18 — Tim Easton is performing a house concert. Contact KC Turner presents
10/11/18 — James Bay at the Greek. I saw him open for someone years ago and I remember liking him. I was surprised to find him headlining the Fillmore in March and I’m even more surprised to see that he’s headlining the Greek. Not because he wasn’t good, but when did he become so popular and how did I miss it?
10/11/18 — Trace Bundy at the Freight
10/12/18 — Israel Nash at Cafe du Nord. I once won tickets to see Israel Nash, but I couldn’t go. He’s a name I hear all the time. He’s from TX. That’s all I know.
10/12/18 and 10/13/18 — FERRON at the Freight
10/13/18 — Allen Stone at the Regency
10/13/18 — Jackie Greene at the Fillmore. But will it be Jackie Greene or will it be his usual Dead and Friends line-up? I would go to the former, but I would much rather skip the latter. Update: After seeing him in Nashville with his new band, I’m pretty sure I’m gonna be doing this!
10/13/18 — The Stone Foxes at Slim’s. Local rock and roll!
10/13/18 — Taj Mahal and Fantastic Negrito at UC Theatre
10/13/18 –MOTHERS at Cafe du Nord. I think we saw them at that Canadian music festival. I’m not sure if I liked them; I think Andee did.
10/14/18 — Patterson Hood at the Sweetwater
10/14/18 — The Sheepdogs at the Rickshaw. I saw them at HSB at the Porch stage in 2015. I think I liked them, but I also think I didn’t love them and left. Sun could have had something to do with that. HSB memories tend to be a little hazy.
10/15/18 and 10/16/18 — Maggie Rogers at the Fillmore. 10/15/18 is already sold out.
10/16/18 — Hozier at the Fox. This is already sold out. If you happen to have an extra ticket, I could seriously be interested!
10/16/18 — Rejjie Snow at Brick and Mortar
10/16/18 — Mercury Rev at The Chapel
10/17/18 — Tom Morello at Bimbo’s
10/19/18 — Esme Patterson at Neck of the Woods
10/19/18 — KT Tunstall at GAMH
10/19/18 — Matthew Sweet at the Fillmore
10/19/18 — St Paul and the Broken Bones at the Fox Theatre
10/19/18 — Frankie Boots with Reverend Hylton at Twin Oaks Roadhouse in Penngrove (which is only a little past Petaluma). Believe me, if I hadn’t already purchased tickets for KT Tunstall, I would be totally convincing someone (Rod) to drive me to this show! This is a definite two-fer! Highly recommend!
10/20/18 — John Paul White at the Swedish American Hall
10/20/18 — Mason Jennings at Bimbo’s
10/20/18 — Tune-Yards at the Fillmore. I’ve never see Tune-Yards, but have heard good things.
10/21/18 — Junk Parlor at BoTH. I think Teri and Pat really liked them. I liked them when I saw them, but it was with that French band Rikkha and they blew me away so there’s that.
10/21/18 — Lil Dicky at the Fox. Tickets are too pricey for me and this was cancelled.
10/21/18 — The Steel Wheels at the Freight. I can’t see how I wouldn’t go to this show. They don’t come around often enough for my liking and these guys are genuinely nice guys and put on a great music festival (Red Wing Roots)
10/22/18 — Edie Brickell and New Bohemians at the Fillmore. I would certainly consider this though I’m fairly certain that I’m already booked.
10/23/18 — The Joy Formidable at the Independent. I really like this band; they are LOUD!
10/25/18 — The Subdudes at the Freight. I want to go to this, but the tickets are $40 and that just seems a little bit too dear for me these days.
10/25/18 — MarchFourth at GAMH
10/25/18 — The Easy Leaves as a part of Haunted Honky Tonk at the Starline Social Club
10/26/18 — The Subdudes at the Hopmonk
10/26/18 — Songs from the Hymnal: An evening with Brian Fallon and Craig Finn at Slim’s. This is sold out and I missed my opportunity to score a ticket so I guess I’ll just have to go to…
10/26/18 — Joshua Hedley at the Chapel. He is the former fiddler for both Justin Townes Earle and Jonny Fritz. He is amazing; I saw him at SXSW. His jacket was even more amazing than he was, possibly.
10/27/18 — Billy Strings at GAMH. I would tell you to get a ticket because he’s something else, but it’s already sold out. However, he’s playing the Mystic and there are still tickets available for that show and rumor has it, they are only $15. Wha?!? Why do shows in Petaluma require a car?
10/27/18 — The Devil Makes Three at the Fox. Yup! And Erika Wennerstrom (Heartless Bastards) is opening.
10/27/18 — Willy Tea Taylor opening for The Sam Chase & The Untraditional at The Chapel
10/28/18 — The Sadies at The Chapel
10/30/18 — Parker Millsap at the Chapel. This should sell out; I’m not saying it will, but I’m saying it should!
10/31/18 & 11/1/18 — The B-52’s at The Fillmore
11/1/18 — Great Lake Swimmers at the Swedish American Hall. I think this is a must!
11/2/18 — FIDLAR (Fuck It Dog, Life’s A Risk) headlining the Fox. I’ve loved this band since I accidentally saw them open for Delta Spirit (and they were SO MUCH BETTER than Delta Spirit).
11/2/18 — If you aren’t a FIDLAR fan (and I know a lot of you are not), you should consider going to the Starry Plough to see KUINKA. They were one of my favorite new discoveries at RWR this past July and I would love to see them again. High energy! Good music! They have a Tiny Desk Concert if you want to give them a look before heading to the Starry Plough.
11/3/18 — Jim James at the Fox
11/3/18 — Lindsay Lou at Brick & Mortar. I’ve see Lindsay Lou perform with The Flatbellies at Red Wing Roots in the past. I’ve also seen her sing with The Brothers Comatose and maybe Front Country, etc. I like her. I’d go to this.
11/4/18 — Passenger at the Fillmore
11/4/18 — KUINKA at the Hopmonk in Sebastapol. I would love to do this; just putting it out there in the world. Not sure if it’s realistic the day after the 50ish and lacking wheels and all that, but…
11/4/18 — SF Leonard Cohen Festival with Conspiracy of Beards & Friends at the Swedish American Hall
11/5/18 — The Milk Carton Kids at the UC Theatre. They have a band now. Their set was short at Americanafest, so the jury is still out for me. Not that I didn’t like their band, but there wasn’t as much of the funny patter between them.
11/5/18 — The Menzingers at Slim’s
11/5/18 — Los Campesinos! at August Hall
11/6/18 — Goo Goo Dolls at the Fillmore
11/7/18 — Rubblebucket at August Hall
11/7/18 — Tyler Childers at the Fillmore. If you like country… but this is already sold out because he’s a hot ticket these days.
11/8/18 — Greensky Bluegrass with the Lil Smokies opening at the Fillmore
11/9/18 — Lucero at the Warfield. I love Lucero! Also, Strand of Oaks is opening for this show. Wait! This has changed and now Jonny Fritz is opening! OMG! I’ll be at this show fer sure.
11/9/18 — Thunderpussy is opening for someone at the Fillmore
11/9/18 — Tank and the Bangas and Big Freedia at the UC Theatre. How can you not go to this?
11/9/18 — Sean Hayes at The Chapel. This might be how you don’t go see Tank and the Bangas and Big Freedia. I feel overdue for a Sean Hayes fix. He may be local, but I never get to see him these days.
11/9/18 — Donna the Buffalo at Slim’s
11/10/18 — Rufus Wainwright at the Masonic. I love Rufus!
11/10/18 — John Craigie at August Hall
11/12/18 — Sir Sly with JoyWave at the Fillmore. I just saw JoyWave open for Bishop Briggs. I liked them; I didn’t love them.
11/13/18 — Dermot Kennedy at the Fillmore. I just listened to his Tiny Desk Concert and it made me want to go to this show, but sadly it was sold out by the time I tried to buy tickets last week.
11/13/18 — Southern Culture on the Skids at Slim’s
11/14/18 — Blitzen Trapper at the Independent
11/14/18 and 11/15/18 — Van Morrison at the Fox Theatre
11/15/18 — Joan Baez at the Masonic. She was so inspiring when I saw her at Wesley Stace’s Cabinet of Wonders, but everyone really was that night. What a night!
11/15/18 — Con Brio is opening for Blues Traveler at The Warfield
11/16/18 — Kodaline at the UC Theatre. I either saw them open for LP or I saw LP open for them. I think the latter; it was right after I got home from Sri Lanka so I have reason to be fuzzy from jet lag
11/16/18 — The Mowgli’s at the Swedish American Hall
11/17/18 — Phosphorescent with Liz Cooper and the Stampede opening at the Fillmore. I love Phosphorescent (not in the least because he wears tees with his own band name while he’s on stage) and I really want to see Liz Cooper.
11/17/18 — Willie Watson is the special guest of Marty O’Reilly at Cornerstone in Berkeley.
11/17/18 and 11/18/18 — Joan Baez at the Fox. 11/17 is sold-out! No doubt 11/18 will sell out shortly. She’s legend!
11/18/19 — KC Turner Presents
John Craigie with Rainbow Girls opening at the HopMonk Novato
11/19/18 — A Magical Night of Musical Friends with Lukas Nelson and Alex and Ben Morrison to name a few at the Sweetwater. This is OBVIOUSLY sold out!
11/21/18 — Wesley Stace (fka John Wesley Harding) is opening for Steven Page Trio (apparently Steven Page is the co-founder and former frontman for Barenaked Ladies)
11/23/18 — The Birds of Chicago at The Chapel. Again, this may not sell out, but it really really should! So much that I’m going to Santa Cruz to see them too!
11/23/18 and 11/24/18 — Jorja Smith at The Warfield. The 23rd is sold out. I forget where I heard her — it might have been a Tiny Desk Concert — but she sounded awesome.
11/23/18 and 11/24/18 — Los Lobos & X w/ Jane Wiedlin (The GoGo’s) at the Fillmore
11/24/18 — Jackie Greene is playing a ‘secret’ show at The Sweetwater. The only way to get tickets was to enter a contest through Spotify. I did not win tickets. I am a little sad, but I’m supposed to go see Birds of Chicago in Santa Cruz which is more than a consolation prize and my usual ride to San Rafael will be at that show in Santa Cruz so I would have difficulty getting to The Sweetwater even if I had won. Sometimes I really miss Ellie! This week is one of those weeks; it doesn’t happen often.
11/24/18 — T Sisters at the Mystic in Petaluma. If I didn’t have tickets for Birds of Chicago, this is where I would go, especially because I believe that Ben and Alex Morrison are opening this show.
11/25/18 — Joshua Radin at The Chapel
11/27/18 — Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker at the Fox. Lucy Dacus is opening
11/28/18 — Listening Party with Laurie Anderson at SFJAZZ. This is sold out!
11/28/19 and 11/29/19 — Tash Sultana at the Fox. These are both sold out! I’m a little bummed cause someone just turned me onto this and I’d really like to go.
11/29/18 — Laurie Anderson: Songs for Women at SFJAZZ. This is sold out, but is part of a residency at SFJAZZ that continues for this week and has tickets available for some performances.
11/29/18 — Ingrid Michaelson Trio presents Songs for the Season at the Masonic
11/29/18 — The Travelin’ McCourys at the Freight
11/30/18 — The Old 97’s Holiday Extravaganza at the Fillmore with Rhett Miller opening as well. I’m in!
11/30/18 –Nicki Bluhm (with The Coffis Brothers opening) at Terrapin Crossroads. This girl (me) is hopeful that she plays somewhere else in the Bay Area because I’d really like to see her again (after seeing her in Nashville), but my dance card is already full for 11/30.
12/1/18 — Paul Thorn at the Hopmonk Sebastopol. I wish Sebastopol was closer.
12/1/18 — Elvis Costello & The Imposters at the Masonic. I’ll be honest, I didn’t love Elvis Costello when I saw him at the Greek last year; it may have been one of my least favorite shows, so I’m not inclined but I want to be inclined because I do LOVE Elvis Costello
12/1/18 and 12/2/18 — Ryan Bingham at the Sweetwater. These are both sold out!
12/2/18 — KC Turner is organizing the Camp Fire Relief Benefit at the Hopmonk Novato. Artists include Alejandro Escovado, T Sisters, Megan Slankard, Heather Combs and Dan Bern to name a few. All proceeds go to NVCF. I’ve written a brief blogpost
about the benefit.
12/2/18 — AJ Lee and Blue Summit at Flynn’s Cabaret
12/3/18 — Neko Case at the Fox
12/4/18 — Over the Rhine at The Freight
12/4/18 — Willie Watson and Charlie Parr at GAMH
12/5/18 and 12/6/18 — Roseanne Cash & Ry Cooder, the music of Johnny Cash at the War Memorial Opera House. I think this might need to happen.
12/6/18 — Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds at the Independent. They are always a good time!
12/6/18 — Mary Gauthier at The Freight. As written before… I may have seen Mary years ago at the Lyons Folk Festival
, but I can’t remember. (Surprise! but in all fairness I believe it was before I was keeping lists of shows that I saw and there was a fair amount of alcohol involved in that weekend.) I do know that she writes some pretty amazing lyrics and I’ve liked what I’ve heard. I tried to see her in March, but had to miss the show to attend my grandmother’s funeral, but then I did see her at Americanafest this year and now I REALLY want to support her. She is AMAZING!
12/6/18 — Postmodern Jukebox at the Warfield. I just heard a story about this guy that piqued my interest. I really wish it weren’t on the same night as three other shows I want to see
12/6/18 — KOLARS opening for Shakey Graves at the Fox. I crazy love KOLARS. This is hard because I really want to see Mary Gauthier after seeing a short set of hers at Americanafest. I need to think about this. Too bad for Postmodern Jukebox. I think they would have been fun. Why? Oh why?
12/6/18 — Dweezil Zappa at the Fillmore
12/7/18 — HAWKTAIL with Dead Horses opening at The Freight. I love Dead Horses and I want to see HAWKTAIL so there’s that. Of course I also want to see…
12/7/18 — Bomba Estereo at the Fox. This appears to have sold out while I wasn’t watching which makes the decision for this evening much easier
12/7/18 — Little Steven & The Disciples of Soul at The Fillmore
12/7/18 and 12/8/18 — David Luning at the Hopmonk Sebastopol
12/8/18 — She & Him at the Masonic. This is a holiday show.
12/8/18 — Sea of Bees is opening at BotH
12/8/18 — The Allman Family Revival at the Fillmore
12/9/18 — Peter Bjorn and John at the Independent
12/9/18 — Emily Scott Robinson at the Back Room. She has a song that I like that I think I found when I was prepping for Americanafest
12/12/18 — Pinegrove at GAMH. This is already sold out!
12/12/18 — Kurt Vile and the Violators at the Fox.
12/13/18 — Mt Joy is playing at the Masonic as part of KFOG’s Concert for Kids
12/13/18 and 12/14/18 — Willie Nelson and Family at the Fox. 12/13 is sold out!
12/14/18 — Dustbowl Revival at The Independent. YES!!!!
12/14/18 – 12/16/18 — Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn at The Freight
12/15/18 — The Human Condition (THC) at The Lost Church
12/16/18 — John Grant at GAMH. Pat thinks we should go to this.
12/16/18– Songs About Something with The Sam Chase at the Ivy Room
12/16/18 — There’s a free show at The Sweetwater during the day with Chuck Prophet
12/17/18 & 12/18/18 — Tenacious D at the Fox. Both of these shows are sold out!
12/21/18 — Fishbone: Crazy Glue Xmas at GAMH
12/21/18 & 12/22/18 — David Grisman Sextet at The Freight
12/22/18 — Frankie Boots at the HopMonk Sebastapol
12/22/18 and 12/23/18 — The Blind Boys of Alabama at SFJAZZ
12/23/19 — Matt Jaffe is performing a free holiday show at the Sweetwater
12/27/18 — An Evening with Robyn Hitchcock at The Chapel
12/27/18 — REBUILDING BUTTE: Camp Fire Relief Benefit at Neck of the Woods. Line-up includes Smokey The Groove, Hot Buttered Some (Members of Hot Buttered Rum), Ben Morrison & Alex Morrison (of The Brothers Comatose), The Rowan Brothers, Deep Blue Jam w/ support from HDSF DJs
12/27/18 & 12/28/18 — The California Honeydrops at Cornerstone in Berkeley
12/29/18 — The English Beat at Cornerstone in Berkeley
12/31/18 — Lee Fields and the Expressions with Quinn DeVeaux opening at The Chapel. This show is sold out and for good freaking reason!
1/4/19 — Quinn DeVeaux is opening for someone at Moe’s Alley
1/5/19 — Blame Sally at The Freight
1/9/19 — KONGOS at GAMH
1/9/19 — Dakh Daughters at the Freight. I’ve heard tell that these are the women from DhakaBrahka
1/10/19 — Sean Hayes at the Rickshaw Stop to celebrate the Rickshaw’s 15th anniversary
1/11/19 — The Magpie Salute at UC Theatre with The Stone Foxes opening.
1/11/19 — The Pimps of Joytime at The New Parish
1/11/19 — Jeff Tweedy in Conversation with George Saunders (City Arts & Lectures). My original boyfriend!!!
1/11/19 & 1/12/19 — Patti Smith & Her Band at the Fillmore. I’ve never seen Patti Smith (I’m more than a little embarrassed to admit that) and I think it’s time to correct this, so… I’m gonna try to get a ticket tonight and am hoping they didn’t sell out already (they only went on sale yesterday). My hopes were dashed last night and I guess Patti will have to remain on my bucket list unless someone has an extra!
1/12/19 — The Brother Brothers are opening for Whiskerman at Cornerstone in Berkeley. I really like the Brother Brothers. They are mellow, but oh-so-sweet.
1/13/19 — Lucy Kaplansky at the Freight. I love Lucy Kaplansky and still have never seen her on her own.
1/16/19 — The American Crossroads Trio – David Bromberg + Larry Campbell + David Hidalgo at The Chapel
1/17/19 — Matthew Perryman Jones at Neck of the Woods
1/17/19 — The Easy Leaves (duo) opening for Corb Lund at the Mystic
1/18/19 — Dawes at the Fox
1/18/19 — Music, Art & the Summer of Love with Essence at the Haight Street Art Center. This is hosted by Renee & Irish Greg’s Pop UP!
If you haven’t checked them out, you really should! I got to see The Wood Brothers in this space and it was AMAZING!!!! And someone was just telling me something about Essence that made me really want to see her. Plus, she has a song from a million years ago that I LOVE, ‘Sleeping With the Driver’.
1/18/19 — Paul Thorn at the Mystic in Petaluma. I would be trying to go to this, except he’s playing in Berkeley….
1/19/19 — Paul Thorn at Cornerstone. I think all of you know that I have a pic of us dancing from a Kate Wolf festival. It’s in my box of very favorite moments (not the physical pic, just the memory — the box isn’t real though I have many boxes filled with pics). Also, he’s at the Mystic in Petaluma on January 18th.
1/19/19 — Mayya and the Revolutionary Hell Yeah at the Rickshaw
1/19/19 — Ozomatli at The Fillmore
1/20/19 — The Flesh Eaters at The Independent. I would totally be going to this if I didn’t have tickets to see my boyfriend, Rhett.
1/20/19 — Loudon Wainwright III at The Freight
1/20/19 — Wheels Off with Rhett Miller at The Swedish (SF Sketchfest)
1/22/19 — Jacob Banks at the Fillmore. This guy’s voice. Yes! If you don’t believe me, check out the song ‘Chainsmoking’. That is all.
1/22/19 — Lera Lynn at the Sweetwater
1/23/19 — Coulter Wall at GAMH. He sold out the Independent the last time he was here (although Jade Bird was opening). I was supposed to see him last July at RWR, but he had to cancel; I believe he was ill. I’d like to see him.
1/24/19 — Lera Lynn at the Swedish American Hall
1/24/19 — Secret Emchy Society at the Lost Church
1/25/19 — JJ Grey & Mofro at The Fillmore. Apparently this is sold out and Jill Katz is looking for tickets if you have an extra!
1/25/19 — Martin Sexton at Terrapin Crossroads
1/26/19 — LP at the Fox. I really really love LP. Apparently so does everyone else because this show sold out (and I didn’t get a ticket). I was *not* expecting that!
1/26/19 — Big Head Todd and the Monsters at The Fillmore
1/27/19 — Wild Child at the Independent. I love Kelsey Wilson. In case you don’t know, Kelsey was the woman playing with the super group Glorieta (at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass).
1/27/19 — The Milk Carton Kids Sad Songs Comedy Hour at the Marines Memorial Theatre (part of SF Sketchfest)
1/29/19 — Fantastic Negrito at The New Parish. 2nd show added cause it looks like the first show sold out. Not a surprise IMO!
1/30/19 – 2/1/19 — Guster at Bimbo’s. 2/1/19 is sold out
1/30/19 — Willy Tea Taylor at the Sweetwater
1/31/19 — Korby Lenker + Chris Donohoe at The Lost Church. The same person that told me to check out Corb Lund, also told me to check out Korby Lenker.
1/31/19 — Fantastic Negrito at The New Parish. It looks like this is sold out.
2/1/19 — Blame Sally at the Hopmonk Novato (KC Turner presents)
2/1/19 — Richard Thompson at The Fillmore
2/1/19 — Front Country at the UC Theatre. I really love this band; they are a good time and they are nice people. They are opening for Railroad Earth so I may try to catch their show at Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz on January 30th.
2/2/19 — Diego’s Umbrello is opening for someone at The Independent
2/7/19 — Glen Phillips (of Toad the Wet Sprocket) at the Swedish American Hall (KC Turner Presents). He’s wonderful solo!
2/7/19 — Rainbow Girls at The Independent
2/8/19 — Steep Canyon Rangers at GAMH
2/8/19 and 2/9/19 — Michael Franti and Spearhead at The Fillmore
2/9/19 and 2/10/19 — Joan Osborne (sings the songs of Bob Dylan) at the Sweetwater. February 9th is sold out!
2/10/19 — Glen Phillips (of Toad the Wet Sprocket) at the Hopmonk Novato (KC Turner Presents)
2/11/19 — Elizabeth Cook at the Chapel. I’ll probably try to catch this show. If you wanna go, you might wanna get your tickets. I have on strong authority that this show will sell out.
2/11/19 — The Kooks at the Fox Theatre. I really enjoyed The Kooks when I saw them at OL a few years ago. Also, Barns Courtney is opening. I really liked him when I saw him previously as well. Downside, I’d really like to see Elizabeth Cook and that show is happening *in* SF.
2/13/19 — Ben Morrison and his band will be opening for The Record Company at the Catalyst. How much do I want to be at this show?
2/14/19 — Gregory Alan Isakov with John Craigie opening at The Fillmore. This is a show that I want to go to, but I have a feeling that I will not enjoy a Valentine’s Day show seeing Gregory Alan Isakov. I am imagining what the audience will be like and it does not fill me with a desire to witness this Hallmark holiday enacted out in public and in one of my favorite spaces. Also, the last time that I saw Gregory Alan Isakov didn’t wow me; I will likely pass on this.
2/14/19 — The Sam Chase and Willy Tea Taylor at the Lost Church.
2/15/19 — Gregory Alan Isakov with Laura Gibson opening at The Fillmore. I don’t know Laura Gibson. If it were John Craigie, I’d be more likely to go since it’s not Valentine’s Day
2/16/19 — Kacey Musgraves at the Masonic. She’s another one that I want to like but find rather boring though her most recent album has a few songs that I like. That said, I also think the sound is shitty (especially given that they just redid that venue) at the Masonic so this isn’t really one for me.
2/22/19 — Horseshoes and Hand Grenades opening for ALO at the Fillmore. I really liked them when I saw them with The Brothers Comatose a few years ago. Not sure that I have a strong need to see ALO; they seem a little jammy for me.
2/22/19 — Big Freedia is a special guest of The Soul Rebels at August Hall. From what I’ve heard, this show should be a must for Big Freedia alone!
2/24/19 — Mazzy Star at the Fox. If I were going to be in town, I would be at this show! They are only playing three shows, one in SF and two in LA. I’m super bummed that I won’t be able to catch any of these. You should go!!!!
2/24/19 — The You and Me Tour: An Evening with Drew and Ellie Holcomb at the Swedish American Hall. I saw Drew Holcomb with his band a couple summers ago at RWR and I really liked him. I’d consider this.
2/27/19 — Noam Pikelny and Stuart Duncan at the Freight
2/27/19 — Haley Heynderickx at the Swedish American Hall. I don’t remember why, but her name is in my brain so I like something about her, but I don’t know if it’s just from the radio or from NPR or someone’s recommendation
2/28/19 — Jason Lytle from Grandaddy doing Song on Acoustic Piano and Guitar at the Swedish American Hall
2/28/19 — Caroline Rose at The Independent. I really like her and missed all but a song and a half the last time she played SF, so…
2/28/19 – 3/3/19 — Bill Frisell at The Freight. Each night is different, including one solo night.
3/1/19 — Umphrey’s McGee at The Fox
3/1/19 and 3/2/19 — The California Honeydrops at the New Parish
3/2/19 — The Bob Mould Band at the Fillmore
3/2/19 — Darlingside at GAMH. This is a must in my opinion. In case you missed it, they won Best of the Jammies for 2018 HSB. It was close for many reasons, but we gave it to them. They have never disappointed me. There is healing in their music. Go! See them!
3/2/19 — Ben Morrison (with Band) at BotH. This is one of those moments where I’m glad I already have tickets to Darlingside because otherwise I would genuinely be torn and not know which show to attend. It is also a moment where I am thinking, maybe just maybe I can get from GAMH to BotH after Darlingside finishes, but before Ben and Band finish. Maybe?!? If you aren’t going to go to Darlingside, I strongly encourage to go to this show!
3/2/19 — Joe Jackson at the Masonic. I wouldn’t mind seeing him again, but I’m going to Darlingside. Better sound at GAMH and I’m sure the ticket price is more reasonable and also did I mention the healing…
3/2/19 — Beirut at the Fox
3/2/19 — Shook Twins at Cornerstone in Berkeley
3/3/19 and 3/4/19 — Andrea Gibson at the New Parish. It looks like they added a second show and that the 3/3/19 show may be sold out.
3/5/19 — Griffin House at the Hopmonk Novato (KC Turner Presents)
3/5/19 — An Evening with Pete Yorn at GAMH
3/7/19 — Jukebox the Ghost & The Mowgli’s at August Hall
3/8/19 and 3/9/19 — The Wood Brothers at The Fillmore. Yes! But which night? Or both? Dilemmas…. Oh, and Carsie Blanton is opening. She has a song that I like ‘Smoke Alarm’ and also I think one or both of the Wood brothers produced her album
3/9/19 and 3/10/19 — Ladysmith Black Mambazo at The Freight
3/10/19 — Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds at the Sweetwater (also at Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz on 3/9/19 — no SF dates)
3/12/19 — Marc Cohn at the Sweetwater; this is a seated show. Also, Marc Cohn is how I found Brandi Carlile way back in the Fort Collins days. Also, Marc Cohn has a fascinating back story about getting shot in the head in Denver.
3/13/19 — Rhett Miller at the Sweetwater; this is a seated show. I would likely be at this show except that I expect I’ll be SXSWing.
3/14/19 — The Suffers at the Independent. I would definitely be at this show if I weren’t SXSWing. I really enjoyed their performance at the festival where I saw them in Sonoma last year.
3/15/19 — G Love and Special Sauce at The Independent
3/15/19 — Greg Brown at The Freight
3/16/19 — Low at GAMH. This is sold out! I didn’t get a ticket, but I probably won’t be in town anyway and if I am, there’s always….
3/16/19 — T Sisters at the Swedish
3/16/19 — Goodnight, Texas (opening for Kitchen Dwellers) at The Mystic in Petaluma
3/19/19 — Mike Doughty at the Hopmonk Novato (KC Turner presents)
3/19/19 — Dar Williams at The Freight. This is tough; I’ll just be returning from a trip the day before, but I love love love Dar.
3/20/19 — Mike Doughty plays Soul Coughing’s “Ruby Vroom” at GAMH
3/21/19 — Mandolin Orange at the Fillmore
3/21/19– Rayland Baxter at GAMH
3/21/19 — Steve Poltz at the Swedish American (KC Turner Presents
). Why does this have to be the same night as Mandolin Orange? Sigh! He is also playing the Mystic on the 23rd and Flynn’s Cabaret in Felton on the 24th
3/22/19 — Austin Lucas at Hotel Utah. I wish I could go to this!
3/23/19 — KUINKA at Brick & Mortar. I loved this band when I saw them at Red Wing Roots. This is a hard yes IMO! Until….
3/23/19 — Orishas at the UC Theatre. I am really torn now. Orishas has reunited after a 7 year hiatus. It looks like they are only playing 6 shows and only 3 of them are in the US. The fact that one of them is in Berkeley…. and I really want to see them but think the sound at the UC Theatre is sub-par. I also did not love my first hip-hop show. What to do? What to do? KUINKA is also playing on 3/21 at the Sweetwater, except there are already so many good shows on the 21st. What’s a girl to do if she can’t clone herself?
3/23/19 — Smoking Popes at BotH
3/23/19 — Frankie and the Witch Fingers are opening for someone at The Independent. I didn’t see them, but they won ‘Best of the Jammies’ at SXSW2019 according to one of the guys I met during SXSW2018. They are also doing a free in-store at Amoeba SF at 2 pm on 3/24/19. Maybe if my weekend goes well, I’ll try to catch this.
3/26/19 — Maren Morris at the Masonic. I really liked the song they played on NPR for New Music Friday a few weeks ago.
3/27/19 — James Bay at the Fox. Per my earlier note, when did he get so popular? Not how, but when
3/27/19 — Dustbowl Revival at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa. Anybody wanna give me a ride?
3/27/19 — Citizen Cope at August Hall
3/27/18 — Robbie Fulks at The Freight
3/27/19 & 3/28/19 – Matt Nathanson at GAMH. 3/28/19 is already sold out. And now so is 3/27/19
3/28/19 — Rubblebucket at the UC Theatre with Twain opening. I’ve been told that I need to see Rubblebucket. The fact that Twain is opening is NOT an incentive.
3/28/19 — Driftwood (a RWR discovery) is finally coming to the West (best) Coast. They will be playing at Hotel Utah. I am definitely planning to be at this show. I have thoroughly enjoyed both times that I saw them, though I have to give Rayn’s friend, Brad, a lot of credit for some of the non-musical enjoyment the first time!
3/29/18 — Tim Bluhm at The Chapel with The Coffis Brothers opening
3/29/19 –Ryan Bingham at The Independent which is, of course, sold out. I didn’t get a ticket; I think I should have. Upside, he’s playing a free in-store at Amoeba SF at noon on March 30th (see below). I was gonna try to do this, but I think I have a haircut in Rockridge at the same time. Boo!
3/30/19 — Devon Gilfillian is opening for Brothers Osborne at the Fox.
3/30/19 — Mt Joy at the Fillmore. I’d like to got to this show. I think it will sell out if it hasn’t already
3/30/19 — Sean Hayes at Terrapin Crossroads
3/30/19 — Ryan Bingham at Amoeba in SF at noon (free)
3/30/19 — Durand Jones & The Indications at The Independent. This is sold out! I don’t actually know this band, but there was a lot of talk about them during SXSW this year. Also playing at the New Parish on 3/29 but this is also sold out!
4/2/19 — Sweet Spirit at BotH. I really loved this band when I saw them at Brick & Mortar. Andee recommended! I loved! Check out ‘The Power’ if you need to see what they are like! It’s one of my Fuck the Patriarchy anthems! Or maybe it’s just my second life motto…. I got the power here inside of myself! Also El Radio Fantastique is opening.
4/4/9 — Delhi 2 Dublin at the Independent. They were at HSB in the past; I didn’t see them, but when doing my ‘homework’, they were definitely a band that I was interested in seeing
4/6/19 — Graham Parker at The Freight. I won’t lie that I’m surprised this hasn’t sold out.
4/6/19 — Low Cut Connie at GAMH. This is is all around fun band and as Rod said ‘they were made for this room’. It’s gonna be a fun (birthday, not mine) show!
4/6/19 — Pokey LaFarge at the Freight. Bad timing (see above)!!!
4/7/19 — Graham Parker at the Hopmonk Novato (KC Turner presents). This is sold out!
4/8/19 — J.S. Ondara at Cafe du Nord. I really liked this guy at SXSW and would like to see him in a less talky situation; not sure that du Nord qualifies. Before it closed and re-opened, it was one of the worst venues for hipsters talking over the music. More of see and be seen then a go see the band situation.
4/10/19 — David Jacobs-Strain at the Lost Church
4/10/19 — Dermot Kennedy at the Fox. He sold out the Fillmore before I got a ticket last time he came around so I might need to try this.
4/11/19 — The Coffis Brothers and David Luning are both performing at The Ivy Room as part of KPFA’s 70th Anniversary Celebration
4/12/19 — Keller Williams at The Independent
4/12/19 — Beats Antique at the Fox
4/13/19 — Buddy Guy at The Masonic
4/13/19 — The Harmaleighs at Hotel Utah. A friend actually gave me their CD years ago and I liked it and then they were playing at Red Wing Roots and I went to see them and liked them. Nice harmonies. Surprise!
4/14/19 — Los Lobos at the Sweetwater. This is sold out!
4/16/19 — Superorganism at GAMH. I’ve been listening to The Prawn Song.
4/16/19 — Leikeli47 at the New Parish. This is sold out and I have a ticket for Superorganism, but I would have considered this.
4/17/19 & 4/18/19 — Soccer Mommy with Boy Scouts opening at GAMH. Soccer Mommy hasn’t grabbed me yet but I know people who think they are the real deal. Thursday night is sold out. I imagine Wed night will soon.
4/18/19 & 4/19/19 — Hopalong at The Independent. This is another band that I feel like I should like, but I didn’t really when I saw them at HSB a couple years ago… in fact, I left the stage they were performing… maybe they were having a bad day?
4/19/19 — Maggie Rogers at the Fox. This is sold out!
4/19/19 — Marchfourth at the New Parish
4/19/19– The Lil Smokies at Slim’s
4/19/19 — Four Year Bender album release party at Cafe du Nord. They opened for The Brothers Comatose at their last show in SF with Ryan and Gio.
4/20/19 — The Sugarhill Gang at the New Parish. If Jen Jefferies lived in the Bay Area, I’d be trying to talk her into going to this show. Memories of Evergreen Road…
4/20/19 — Gaelynn Lea at the Swedish American Hall. Winner of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert…
4/20/19 — Ben Morrison (The Brothers Comatose) and Erika Tietjen( (T Sisters) are performing together, opening for/special guests of Midnight North at the Mystic Theatre
4/23/19 — Strand of Oaks at The Independent. They’re a Philly band
4/23/19 — Ex Hex at GAMH. Mary Timony is one of the three members of Ex Hex. She was formerly in Wild Flag with Carrie Brownstein
4/23/19 — Adam Faucett at Hotel Utah
4/23/19 — The Legendary Shack Shakers at Cornerstone
4/24/19 — Horse Feathers at The New Parish (recommended by Renee)
4/24/19 — Ben Kweller at The Chapel. He’s a good time!
4/25/19 — Bread & Roses is having their Spring Benefit Concert featuring Lucius and The Nude Party. If you’ve read our blogposts about SXSW2019, you’d probably see that I really liked The Nude Party. They had maracas. I’ve also always like Lucius, so that would make this fun. Then there’s also Matt Jaffe on the bill. Matt is a local singer/songwriter who I recently saw at a house concert. I really enjoyed his performance. Since this is a benefit, tickets are $125 and only available online.
4/26/19 — Charley Crockett at The Hopmonk Tavern in Novato. This is a KC Turner Presents
offering and it’s a good one. Charley knocked my socks off at RWR last year. He’s recently had some health problems and is back on tour and deserves our support
4/28/19 — John Vanderslice at the Rickshaw Stop
4/28/19 — Reverend Hylton at the Hotel Utah. I feel like I’ve been waiting a long time for this so I feel comfortable saying I’m going to make this happen. If you haven’t read my blogpost about the last time that I saw (discovered) him at the Hotel Utah, you should. It’s one of my rare reviews (vs why you should go to this show). I plan to be at this show (which is an early — 6 pm — show).
5/1/19 — Princess (Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum) at GAMH. I saw them before and really enjoyed them, except that Maya Rudolph was VERY pregnant and at one point when she was writhing on the floor, I got nervous that she might actually be in labor. This is sold out!
5/2/19 — Hayes Carll at GAMH. Oh yeah!!! Also, mentioned on the NPR new music Friday podcast on 2/15 (but not played, just a passing mention; I’ll take what I can get). If you haven’t already seen, No Depression published a well-written essay of Hayes Carll entitled ‘If I May Be So Bold’
5/2/19 — Whitey Morgan at Cornerstone
5/3/19 — The Cactus Blossoms at the GAMH. I tried to see them at SXSW, but it didn’t happen and I didn’t try that hard. Depending on when I head to the east coast, I’ll probably try to catch this show.
5/4/19 — Lissie at the UC Theatre
5/4/19 — Matt the Electrician at The Lost Church (KC Turner presents)
5/5/19 — Matt the Electrician at The Hopmonk Sonoma Listening Room (KC Turner presents)
5/5/19 — Nicki Bluhm at Terrapin Crossroads
5/6/19 — Colin Hay (previously of Men at Work) at the Sweetwater
5/6/19 — A Benefit for the Sam Chase at the Hopmonk Tavern in Novato. Local Musicians will be covering songs of The Sam Chase.
This is a KC Turner presents
show. Sam Chase is getting an operation on his injured foot and the cost even with his Heath Care plan is more money than he has. 100% of ticket sales will help pay for Sam’s foot surgery
5/8/19 — Tom ODell and Lucie Silvas at August Hall. I’ve been wanting to see Lucie Silvas for awhile now, so I may try to do this; also, I’ve still not been to August Hall. We shall see as it gets closer. Sadly, I don’t think I’ll be in town for this.
5/9/19 — The Wild Reeds at The Independent. Jenny O is opening (solo). I suspect I will not be in town for this show; we’ll see.
5/9/19 — Junk Parlor at the Ivy Room
5/9/19 — The Cowboy Junkies at The Sweetwater
5/10/19 — Ben Morrison (with his full band) at The Starline Social Club. If I am not with my mom, I’ll be here but I’m fairly certain I’ll be with my mom.
5/10/19 — An Evening with Cowboy Junkies at GAMH. This is sold out!
5/10/19 — Matt Jaffe is one of the openers at BotH. I won’t be in town and I’m sure I’d need to check out the other two bands before I decided, but he’s was great in a house concert setting.
5/10/19 & 5/11/19 — Tedeschi Trucks Band at the Fox. Not my jam, but many of my friends’ jam. The 11th is sold out.
5/11/19 and 5/12/19 — An Evening with Cowboy Junkies at The Freight. 5/11 is already sold out! And now so is 5/12.
5/12/19 — Liz Cooper & The Stampede at The Chapel
5/12/19 — Carsie Blanton at the Independent. I can’t recommend her enough! I LOVED her. She’s sassy and uses ‘fuck’ a lot in her lyrics. ❤
5/13/19 — Eels at the Regency. Not my favorite place, but someday I’m gonna see Eels!
5/13/19 — Illuminati Hotties is opening at GAMH. They were ALL over SXSW but I did not manage to see them.
5/15/19 — Frankie and the Witch Fingers at The Ivy Room. This is a band that a fellow music friend told me won his SX19 Jammie award so if I’m in town, I may need to check this out.
5/15/19 — The Dimmer Twins (Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley of DBT) at the Freight
5/17/19 — Berkeley Bluegrass Festival at the Freight with Hot Buttered Rum, Front Country and Blue Summit. Seems like a good time for the last two bands alone!
5/17/19 — Spin Doctors at the Sweetwater
5/17/19 — Combo Chimbita at Cafe du Nord. We saw them at SX19 and they made me dance, but I think there may have been other substances at play that made me dance too.
5/17/19 — Chris Staples at BotH. He was just recently featured on NPR’s All Songs Considered and I liked what I heard
5/18/19 — Santigold at The Masonic
5/18/19 — The Dandy Warhols at The Fillmore
5/24/19 — Molly Tuttle at The Independent. This should sell out. I’m not saying it will; I’m saying it should. Also Blue Summit is opening — even more reason to go!
5/24/19 — VKTMS at The Ivy Room. I know someone who perform with this local band and I’ve wanted to check them out for awhile. This probably will not be the night (see above).
5/25/19 — Sweet Crude at The Chapel. Yes! Yes! Yes!
5/25/19 — The Specials at the Fox. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed their show last year at the Fox. If it weren’t for Sweet Crude at The Chapel, I’m sure I would be going to this!
5/27/19 — The War and Treaty at Lagunitas Ampitheater. Yeah, I already have my tickets and my ride. This is gonna be good. They are AH-mazing and they never play in the Bay Area.
5/28/19 — Little Feat at the Fox. I would consider this. I saw Melissa Etheridge open for Little Feat at the Mann Music Center when I was in college. For realz!
5/28/19 — Mira Goto at Hotel Utah. I saw her at one of Renee and Irish Greg’s shows at the Haight Street Art Center. I liked her and she had a funny song about her relationship with her cat.
5/29/19 — Ana Tijoux at the New Parish. Assuming I’m going to be in town, I wouldn’t mind going to this
5/29/19 — Suzzy Roche and Lucy Wainwright Roche at The Lost Church in SF
5/30/19 — The Bright Light Social Hour at the Rickshaw Stop. This is a band that I LOVED and then they had a line-up change and the love dissipated quite a bit. I want to find the love again… so maybe I’ll be at this show. We’ll see.
5/30/19 and 6/1/19 — Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real at the Fillmore. I believe these are sold out and I just got to see Lukas Nelson & POTR last week in Austin so I’m okay with that. I do love this sexy man though…. and his music
5/31/19 — Eric McFadden (of Parliament Funk) at The Ivy Room
5/31/19 — The Brothers Comatose at The Mystic in Petaluma
6/1/19 — Suzzy Roche and Lucy Wainwright Roche at The Hopmonk Novato. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen Suzzy, but I really like Lucy!
6/1/19 & 6/2/19 — The Redwood Mountain Faire in Felton with The Brothers Comatose and Dustbowl Revival to name two! Plus The Rainbow Girls, Jesse Daniel and Elliot Peck!! How does one not go to this and visit with one’s ‘in-laws’ at the same time?!?
6/4/19 — FIDLAR at Lagunitas with Tropa Magica opening. Tropa Magica were formerly Thee Commons and I LOVE them. Also, I LOVE FIDLAR. You already knew that. I did not score tickets for this as I am already seeing FIDLAR in Berkeley, but now I’m sad that I didn’t try for this too!
6/4/19 & 6/5/19 — Rainbow Kitten Surprise at the Fox. The 5th is sold out!
6/6/19 — Greg Holden at Hotel Utah.
6/7/19 — Billy Raffoul at August Hall. Andee wanted to see him at SX19, but it was a ‘love the one you’re with’ moment and we stuck with Lukas Nelson. And there was a lot of love….
6/7/19 — Bela Fleck and the Flecktones at the Fox
6/8/19 — Father John Misty and Jason Isbell at the Greek and it’s not a seated show! Woot! And Jade Bird is the opener! Double Woot! Also, I think that Father John Misty might be the closing band which means I don’t have to stay… unless I’m really enjoying FJM.
6/8/19 — Pure Bathing Culture at Cafe du Nord. I recognize the name of this band though can’t place anything they sing. I think they were on my Gregg Roberts CDs that he used to send me annually.
6/8/19 — Jackie Greene (with the Modern Lives Band — who are AWESOME!!!!) at the Fillmore as part of a benefit show (Blue Rose Benefit)
6/8/19 — FIDLAR at Cornerstone. Oh, how I wish I didn’t already have tickets to Jason Isbell… well, maybe I wish that; maybe this is a ‘love the one you’re with’ evening. We shall see. Oh wait! wait!! wait!!!….
6/9/19 — FIDLAR at Cornerstone. That’s right my friends! FIDLAR at Cornerstone. So so so gonna have to be there! I suspect it’ll be a shit-show, but it’ll be a fun shit-show! And Tropa Magica is opening. As best I can tell they are the same band that was formerly called Thee Commons who I saw twice and LOVED both times.
6/10/19 — Johnnyswim at the Masonic. They have a song that I really like and Andee saw them at HSB a few years ago and liked them (though I think she doesn’t really remember them, but I remember that she liked them cause I didn’t go and I was jealous — you see what motivates me….)
6/10/19 — Bear’s Den at August Hall. I feel like I used to listen to them back when I still listened to Daytrotter, but I can’t pull any specifics forward here.
6/12/19 — Kishi Bashi at August Hall. I feel like this will sell out.
6/12/19 — Patty Griffin at The Fillmore. Duh!
6/13/19 — The Mystery Lights at the Chapel. I have to confess that I don’t really know if I would recommend this band or not. I saw them briefly when I was scoring my passes for the Rachel Ray event during SXSW. I’m mostly mentioning them because they were one of the many ‘light’ band names this year.
6/14/19 — Duff McKagan is featuring Shooter Jennings at GAMH. I did enjoy Shooter Jennings when I saw him in the past. Duff McKagan was in GNR.
6/14/19 — Mayya and the Revolutionary Hell Yeah is opening for Slim Cessna’s Auto Club at BotH
6/14/19 — David Luning at the Mystic Theatre
6/14/19 and 6/15/19 — Houndsmouth at The Independent. I wanted to see them for a long time, but then their line-up changed and they no longer have a woman in the band, so I’m a little less sure now.
6/15/19 and 6/16/19 — Alejandro Escovedo at the HopMonk Novato. I’m out of town for a wedding so I’m gonna have to miss the Sat show when Dan Bern is opening. I’m seriously bummed about that, but then the second night was added with Matte Jaffe as the opener and I’m thinking…. isn’t Novato on the way back from Healdsburg? Yeah, I’m not kidding that I’m thinking this. I mean, would it be that hard to get a ride from Novato back to the city? Full disclosure, I’m a convert to Alejandro Escovedo since seeing him and his band at Americanafest 2018 and I have been wanting to see him again…
6/16/19 — John Paul White at The Chapel. I miss the Civil Wars.
6/18/19 — Okkervil River at The Chapel. I could be convinced….
6/19/19 — The Felice Brothers at The Chapel. Always a good time!!! Have I told you the story about the first time I saw them?
6/20/19 — You’re Going to Die Presents: Music from the Ash at the SF Columbarium. I have no idea who will be performing, but it would likely be worth it just to go to the Columbarium, plus You’re Going to Die is a really interesting group whose mission is to bring people creatively into the conversation of death and dying, while helping to inspire and empower them out of the context of unabashedly confronting loss and mortality and Ned (the guy who organizes the group) is really cool!
6/21/19 — Local Natives at the Fox
6/22/19 — Jamestown Revival at The Independent. This sold out already and I’m surprised (not that they aren’t good, but I didn’t even know people knew them… I would have gone to this). There’s a free show at Amoeba in SF at 5 pm on the 22nd if you also didn’t get tickets and would have liked to…
6/22/19 — Team Dresch at Bottom of the Hill. Wha?!? How do I not go to this show?
6/23/19 — Team Dresch at the Ivy Room. This is sold out!
6/23/19 — Dakhabrakha at SF Jazz
6/23/19 — Carson McHone at Hotel Utah. Andee and I saw her at SX18 as part of Paul Cauthen’s showcase at The Rustic Tap. I don’t remember liking her, but I don’t remember disliking her either. I do remember that she was wearing a dress or a skirt and cowboy boots and was carrying her cigarettes in her boots.
6/23/19 — Shinyribs at The Sweetwater. Oh yes, please! I need a ride!
6/25/19 — David Gray at the Fox. I’d really like to see him.
6/25/19 — Reverend Hylton at the Rite Spot Cafe. I feel pretty solid that I’ll be at this show. You should join me!
6/26/19 — Matthew Logan Vasquez (of Delta Spirit and also of the one-time Austin supergroup, Glorieta) at BotH. Definitely interested in this at this point; we shall see as time goes on. Even more interested since seeing him during SXSW and Walker Lukens is one of the openers. I know Andee has written about him before.
6/28/19 — Josh Ritter at the Fox in Oakland. I can’t tell if this is Josh Ritter on his own or with his band. I like him when he’s on his own. And it’s now clear that it’s him with his band and even worse, it’s a seated show. I will not be in attendance. Enjoy if this is your jam! Oh, but wait… that new album is incredible and the band was Jason Isbell’s band. Should I rethink this? Probably not because the show is listed as Josh Ritter & The Royal City Band. Some other day, Josh!
6/28/19 — Avi Vinocur (of Goodnight, Texas) at The Lost Church in SF
6/29/19 and 6/30/19 — Jim James at the Fillmore. Not my jam, but it’s very possibly yours. I seem to be in the minority on this one.
6/30/19 — Dan Bern at the Sweetwater
7/3/19 — Paul Thorn at the Felton Music Hall (which used to be Don Quixote’s and something else before that). The Coffis Brothers are opening. I’d take a ride to this, but it’s sold out so it won’t matter. 😦
7/11/19 — Rosie Flores at GAMH. I’d probably be at this show if I were in town.
7/12/19 — Frankie Boots, Sam Chase & The Untraditional, Willy Tea Taylor at the Mystic. I wish I would be here for this!
7/12/19 – 7/14/19 — Warning: This is not in the Bay Area! I’ll be at Red Wing Roots. Have you looked at the line-up
? It’s pretty darned-good. The Wood Brothers,
First Aid Kit
, Mandolin Orange, Charley Crockett, Lucinda Williams, etc
7/13/19 — Leyline at Neck of the Woods. This is one of Andee’s latest favorite bands and I’d really like to see them. Sadly, I won’t be in town to see this band. You should! Also at Neck of the Woods on 7/13/19 is Matt Jaffe (one is upstairs and one is downstairs). I just saw Matt open for Alejandro Escovedo. There’s a video clip on I/G.
7/14/19 — Jesca Hoop at BotH. She was just recently featured on NPR’s All Songs Considered and I liked what I heard.
7/18/19 — The Brothers Comatose at The Independent. Duh! Especially duh because Goodnight, Texas is the opener!!!
7/18/19 — Dead Horses at University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley. I really like this band in every iteration that I’ve seen them. I recommend this show. I will be busy (see above), but..
7/18/19 & 7/19/19 — Rickie Lee Jones at the Freight. The 19th is sold out; I’ve no doubt the 18th will also sell out. And yes, both nights are sold out
7/19/19 — Jim White at Cafe du Nord. I think this is a must for me. I saw him twice last year at Americanafest and he talked about his issues with mental illness and had some amazing songs and I *really* liked him. I think this will happen and it’ll be my first time at du Nord for music since it re-opened.
7/20/19 – We Were Promised Jetpacks at Slim’s
7/21/19 — Lee Fields and the Expressions will be at Stern Grove. They were a GOOD time in December at The Chapel. Also, I hear someone is planning to make this their birthday celebration. Here’s the link
to see the full Stern Grove line-up with shows starting in June.
7/21/19 — Birds of Chicago at the Hopmonk Novato. Anyone who knows me knows that I Birds of Chicago are one of my faves. I highly recommend this show! This is a KC Turner Presents.
7/21/19 — Black Pistol Fire at The Independent. I saw this band at SXSW. They aren’t necessarily my jam, but they were entertaining AF.
7/23/19 — AA Bondy at Cafe du Nord. I feel like he was recommended to me back when The Wood Brothers were recommended to me. I think we all know how I feel about The Wood Brothers….
7/23/19 — Wood & Wire at the Freight. I don’t know anything about them, except that I think Andee saw them at UtopiaFest substitute/fundraiser or maybe at Old Settlers and they are advertised as Bluegrass.
7/24/19 — mekons at The Chapel
7/24/19 & 7/25/19 — Sweet Honey in the Rock at the Freight
7/26/19 — The Beths at The Independent. This New Zealand band was still tight, performing the morning after the New Zealand massacre. I’d like to see them when they aren’t crying on stage (and I’m not saying that as a judgement, just would be interested to see what they bring when they are totally ‘on’)
7/26/19 — Sarah Shook & The Disarmers at BotH. This is going to make the July 26th decision much more difficult. I liked Sarah Shook a lot the last time I saw her at BotH and I wasn’t able to see her at all during SXSW this year….
7/27/19 — Cracker & Camper Van Beethovan at the Hopmonk Novato. This is already sold out, but if you really want to see Cracker…
7/28/19 — Cracker at the Hopmonk Novato (afternoon show in the session room)
7/28/19 — The Seldom Scene at the Freight
7/28/19 — Chuck Prophet & Stephanie Finch at the Hopmonk Novato. This is a KC Turner presents
8/1/19 — The Waifs at the Freight. I heart them pretty hard and they don’t come around often enough so I’ll probably try to make this happen. The first show at 8 pm is sold out, but a second show at 10 pm has been added.
8/1/19 — The Minus 5 at The Chapel
8/2/19 — Lord Huron, Shakey Graves and Julia Jacklin at the Greek.
8/2/19 — Jolie Holland at the Ivy Room. I’d like to go to this show!
8/4/19 — The Psychedelic Furs and James at Stern Grove
8/4/19 — RIKKHA at the Ivy Room. Oh F#@k yeah!
8/6/19 — Not live music, but…. The Freight is now doing films at the Freight and this one is Muscle Shoals which I still haven’t seen
8/8/19 — Phosphorescent at The New Parish. I wanna….
8/10/19 — Eilen Jewell at the Freight. I am definitely interested in this.
8/11/19 — Pink Martini at Stern Grove. I’ve wanted to see Pink Martini for awhile now. Maybe this will be the time.
8/11/19 — Better Oblivion Community Center at the Independent. This is an Outside Lands show and is already sold out. I’d love to go to this if anyone comes across a ticket they don’t want….
8/15/19 — Fitz & The Tantrums at the Greek. They were a *good* time when I saw them at the Warfield a few years ago I definitely danced!
8/15/19 — Chris Pureka and Willy Tea Taylor at UC Botanical Gardens. This is sold out, but so intriguing….
8/16/19 — The Nude Party at Cafe du Nord. Unfortunately (?), I already have tickets for… LSD and The Avett Bros and then I leave town for a week of camping, ending at a music festival…
8/16/19 and 8/17/19 — Lake Street Dive with The Avett Brothers at the Greek. This is a reserved/seated show which is not my favorite, but the line-up…. so of course, I’m going.
8/17/19 – The Blasters at Slim’s
8/17/19 — Speedy Ortiz at the 20th Street Block Party
8/17/19 — 10,000 Maniacs at the Independent. It’s not Natalie Merchant, of course, and so I’ll pass but you might not feel the way I do. And yes, for those of you who like to play along in my favorite game of ‘I saw them live’… yes, I saw 10,000 Maniacs when Natalie Merchant was still in the band. Early 90’s — Mann Music Center in Philly. Not sure who I was with; I would take a guess that it was at least some grouping of my college roomies — Mags Carla, Tracy and Mel. I still remember Natalie Merchant playing the piano and singing “Verdi Cries”. Some guy joined her onstage and I still swear it was Michael Stipe. (I have no idea and have never been able to corroborate, but he did sing on the album.) And now I’m taking a little Spotify trip down memory lane starting with The Wishing Chair.
8/18/19 — Sean Hayes house party hosted by KC Turner Presents. I would totally go to this if I were in town.
8/19/19 — The Nude Party at Lagunitas Ampitheater. I might just need to do this cause I did really like these guys during SXSW. Tickets go ‘on sale’ on July 30th. Too bad I’m going to be working my way up the coast to WA state.
8/20/19 & 8/21/19 — The Wood Brothers at Terrapin Crossroads. As you all know, I LOVE the Wood Brothers!
8/22/19 — Sean Hayes at UC Botanical Gardens. I’m secretly glad I’m not in town as I’d be bummed that this is already sold out.
8/22/19 — El Radio Fantastique at The Chapel
8/24/19 – 8/25/19 — I’ll be at the THING festival
in Port Townsend, WA. Total implusive decision based on a co-worker I like and Jeff Tweedy and a camping trip in Humboldt. Isn’t that how all the best decisions are made?
8/24/19 — John Doe at the Ivy Room. This is sold out! I wanted a ticket, but Jill waited too long and I guess that’s good since I’ll be in WA!
8/25/19 — John Doe and Robbie Fulks at the Hopmonk Novato. This is a KC Turner Presents.
8/26/19 — John Doe at the Hopmonk Novato with Matt Jaffe opening. This is a KC Turner Presents.
8/27/19 — Jill Sobule opening for Crash Test Dummies at The Chapel. I do love Jill Sobule!
8/29/19 — Jesse Daniel with Vincent Neil Emerson opening at Slim’s. I like Jesse Daniel. He’s local (Santa Cruz-ish) and country. Vincent Neil Emerson opened for someone I saw this year (but for the life of me I can’t remember who that was right now — my list and organizational skills is/are not at its/their best this year). I liked him cause I started to follow him on Instagram…
8/29/19 — Nicki Bluhm at UC Botanical Gardens. This is sold out! If anyone finds out about an extra ticket, they should let me know…
8/30/19 — Ben Morrison Band (Ben of The Brother Comatose) record release party at the Sweetwater. Kelly McFarling is opening. I just got my ticket; you?
8/31/19 — Nicki Bluhm at the Felton Music Hall. If I had known about this, I’d have probably tried to go
9/5/19 — Jonny Fritz with Goodnight Texas at the Minnesota Street Project. If I were going to be in town, I would be at this.
9/7/19 — John Vanderslice at the HopMonk Novato. This is a KC Turner Presents.
9/8/19 — Dustbowl Revival at the Apples and Hops festival at UC Botanical Gardens. I would totally be at this show if I were going to be in town. Alas…
9/8/19 (rescheduled from 8/27/19) — Not live music, but…. The Freight is now doing films at the Freight and this one is Buena Vista Social Club which I really liked when I saw it eons ago…
9/10/19 — Cedric Watson at Ashkenaz. Seriously… go to this show! I would, but I won’t be here. I really really would!
